## What it does

This skill is for anyone touching UI, chrome or overlay behavior in `packages/web-inspector`. Compiling code proves nothing here: the overlay is a visual product, so the agent has to boot the lab and look at the image. Three procedures sit inside — start the workbench, edit and screenshot, stop it.

The default host is the standalone Threads state lab. From the repo root you run `nx run @copilotkit/web-inspector:dev:standalone`, then open `http://127.0.0.1:5177/?scenario=pro-enabled-existing&reset=1`. The port is pinned: if 5177 is taken, free it instead of picking another one. The Nx target runs Vite and the CSS watch together, so `pnpm --filter @copilotkit/web-inspector run dev` is the wrong command — that watch serves consumers, not the lab. Without a browser tool in the session the skill cannot do its job, and guessing visual results from CSS is off the table.

Screenshots go under `.inspector-workbench/<task>/`, never at the repo root, and they are not committed. Add, rename or remove a pane and you also load `inspector-docs` in the same change, otherwise the docs Callout drifts. Unit tests stay in that change too; screenshots do not replace them. Stop the `dev:standalone` process tree when the task ends, because the watchers leak memory.

## Requirements
- Works with: Chrome

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add CopilotKit/CopilotKit --skill inspector-workbench -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/inspector-workbench/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/inspector-workbench/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add CopilotKit/CopilotKit --skill inspector-workbench -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/inspector-workbench/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add CopilotKit/CopilotKit --skill inspector-workbench -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/inspector-workbench/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install CopilotKit/CopilotKit inspector-workbench
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/inspector-workbench/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add CopilotKit/CopilotKit --skill inspector-workbench -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/CopilotKit/CopilotKit --path skills/inspector-workbench
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/inspector-workbench/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add CopilotKit/CopilotKit --skill inspector-workbench -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/CopilotKit/CopilotKit/tree/HEAD/skills/inspector-workbench/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- see how a CSS edit actually renders in the Inspector overlay
- check a pane in both light and dark themes
- catch layout breakage at a narrow viewport
- reproduce an empty, locked or error pane state
- keep docs in sync when a pane is renamed

## Example prompts
- Start the Inspector workbench and screenshot the Home pane before any edits
- Fix the padding in the Threads pane, reload the lab and show me the screenshot
- Check the overlay in dark theme and at a narrow viewport, write screenshots under `.inspector-workbench/`

# Inspector Workbench

The Inspector overlay is a visual product. Code that compiles is not proof.
The agent must run the standalone workbench and look at screenshots after
each visual change.

This skill does not replace `inspector-docs`. If a pane is added, renamed,
or removed, load `inspector-docs` as well.

## When To Use

Load this skill at the start of any task that changes
`packages/web-inspector` UI, chrome, or overlay behavior.

Do not load it for docs-only Callout work. Do not load it for showcase
cells. If the host app is the bug (z-index against host CSS, CopilotChat
layout), use that host, then still take screenshots.

## Default host

The default host is the standalone Threads state lab:

- Command, from the repo root: `nx run @copilotkit/web-inspector:dev:standalone`
- URL: `http://127.0.0.1:5177/?scenario=pro-enabled-existing&reset=1`
- The lab mounts the real `cpk-web-inspector` and opens the overlay.

Do not start a showcase app, an example app, or Storybook as the default
host. Those are slower and hide Inspector-only faults.

The Nx target runs Vite and the CSS watch together. Do not run Vite alone.
Do not run `pnpm --filter @copilotkit/web-inspector run dev`. That watch
serves consumers, not this lab.

## Procedures

### Procedure 1: Start the workbench

1. If the change adds, renames, or removes a pane, load `inspector-docs` too.
2. From the repo root, start `nx run @copilotkit/web-inspector:dev:standalone`.
3. Wait until `http://127.0.0.1:5177` serves.
4. Open the browser tool this session has (Playwright MCP, Claude browser, or Codex computer use).
5. Go to `http://127.0.0.1:5177/?scenario=pro-enabled-existing&reset=1`.
