## What it does

The skill covers native realtime in Inngest v4 for TypeScript. The agent gets a working order: define a typed channel with topics, publish from inside a function, mint a subscription token in a server action, then consume the stream in React/Next.js with the `useRealtime` hook or the lower-level `subscribe()` API.

Package choice is the trap. In v4 realtime lives at the SDK subpath `inngest/realtime`, while the standalone `@inngest/realtime` npm package is v3-era and does not work with `inngest@4.x`. Wrong-package symptoms: `TypeError: Cls is not a constructor` on every `PUT /api/inngest`, 401 on subscription tokens, type errors in `new Inngest({ middleware: [...] })`. Check that `package.json` shows `"inngest": "^4.x"` before you start.

The skill also separates two publish calls. Between steps use `step.realtime.publish` — it wraps the publish in its own step, deduplicates by `id` and survives retries. Inside `step.run` use `inngest.realtime.publish`, because you are already in a memoized step and a step inside a step is not allowed. Local development needs `INNGEST_DEV=1` in `.env.local` and a running dev server via `npx inngest-cli@latest dev`; without them the SDK asks for cloud signing keys and returns 401.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inngest/inngest-skills --skill inngest-realtime -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/inngest-realtime/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/inngest-realtime/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inngest/inngest-skills --skill inngest-realtime -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/inngest-realtime/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inngest/inngest-skills --skill inngest-realtime -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/inngest-realtime/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install inngest/inngest-skills inngest-realtime
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/inngest-realtime/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inngest/inngest-skills --skill inngest-realtime -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/inngest/inngest-skills --path skills/inngest-realtime
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/inngest-realtime/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inngest/inngest-skills --skill inngest-realtime -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- animate an order page as durable steps finish
- stream AI agent tokens from a function to the browser
- tail logs for a long-running job
- collect a human approval with waitForEvent
- fan out live orders to an admin dashboard

## Example prompts
- Define a channel for order status and publish each step from fulfill-order
- Stream agent tokens into the chat UI with inngest/realtime
- Add a human-in-the-loop prompt and wait for the user reply

# Inngest Realtime

Stream updates from durable Inngest functions to live UIs. Use channels and topics to broadcast progress, render workflow execution as it happens, or build bi-directional human-in-the-loop flows.

> **⚠ CRITICAL: v3 vs v4 package selection**
>
> Realtime in Inngest v4 lives at the SDK subpath `inngest/realtime`. The standalone `@inngest/realtime` npm package is a **v3-era package** and is **NOT compatible with `inngest@4.x`**. If your project is on v4 (the npm default), do not install `@inngest/realtime`. Use the imports below.
>
> Symptoms of using the wrong package on v4: `TypeError: Cls is not a constructor` on every `PUT /api/inngest`, 401 on subscription tokens, type incompatibility on `new Inngest({ middleware: [...] })`. Verify your `package.json` shows `"inngest": "^4.x"` before reading further.

## Prerequisites

- Inngest v4 SDK installed (`npm install inngest`) — see the `inngest-setup` skill
- `INNGEST_DEV=1` set in `.env.local` for local development (without it, the SDK demands cloud signing keys and 401s on token requests)
- Local Inngest dev server running (`npx inngest-cli@latest dev`)
- Optional: `zod` for schema validation on topics

## When to use Realtime

| Problem shape | Pattern |
|---|---|
| Order status page animates as durable workflow steps complete | Per-run channel, publish per step, client subscribes |
| AI agent streams tokens to a chat UI | Per-conversation channel, publish chunks, stream to browser |
| Log tail for a long-running job | Single channel, log topic, append to UI |
| Human-in-the-loop approval | Channel + waitForEvent, publish prompt, wait for response |
| Admin dashboard with live order list | Global admin channel, fan-out from each function |
```
