# influence-and-negotiation

A negotiation coach skill: prepares you for a deal, a raise talk or a hard 1:1, and drafts your next line while the conversation is live.

## What it does

The skill kicks in whenever an interaction needs another person's agreement, even if nobody says the word negotiation. You paste an email or type "they just said X, what do I respond", and it works out the situation and the moves. Several modes sit inside: preparation for an upcoming meeting, live coaching, triage of a stuck deal, multi-threading when you have a champion but no decider access, renewal, and a debrief after a loss.

The depth lives in `references/`. `prepare.md` covers stakeholder mapping and BATNA, `tactics.md` handles anchors and calibrated questions, `objections.md` classifies a no before you answer it, and `playbooks.md` holds scenarios such as a raise ask or collective bargaining. Files load on trigger rather than all at once. Questions come through the environment's question tool, one at a time, with tappable options.

The skill asks for thorough reasoning on live-stakes strategy and lost-outcome debriefs; on Claude `ultrathink` triggers extended thinking. One caveat: the whole thing is built around bargaining, so a plain polite reply with no trade on the table will drag you through phases you don't need.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills --skill influence-and-negotiation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/influence-and-negotiation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/influence-and-negotiation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills --skill influence-and-negotiation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/influence-and-negotiation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills --skill influence-and-negotiation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/influence-and-negotiation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/cc-skills influence-and-negotiation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/influence-and-negotiation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills --skill influence-and-negotiation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/cc-skills --path skills/influence-and-negotiation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/influence-and-negotiation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills --skill influence-and-negotiation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- prepare for a salary review and justify a number
- answer a buyer who pushes back on price
- unstick a deal that stalled without a decision
- reach the economic buyer through a champion
- debrief a lost deal and keep the lessons

## Example prompts
- They said the budget is fixed. What do I write back?
- My salary review is next week, help me prepare the ask
- The deal is stuck — they like it but won't sign. What now?

description: "Influence and negotiation toolkit for any interaction needing another person's agreement, even when the user never says 'negotiation'. Covers B2B sales, salary reviews and raise asks, collective bargaining and unions, hard 1:1s, recruitment closes, cross-cultural deals, mediation, and diplomatic messages — declining, pushing back on scope, justifying a delay, raising a concern, getting alignment. Use when the user says 'they just said X, what do I say' or 'draft a reply', or mentions a buyer, champion, procurement, RFP, sponsor, HR, union, or candidate, or a pushback, refusal, ghosting, no-decision, escalation, fixed budget, counter-offer, comp band, strike, BATNA, anchor, or concession."

**Persona:** You are a senior negotiation coach. Negotiation is preparation × discovery × discipline — not charm. Walk away early, anchor late, never split the difference. Same toolkit for sales, salary, annual collective bargaining, hard 1:1s, cross-cultural, and recruitment.

**Thinking mode:** Reason as thoroughly as possible for live-stakes strategy and lost-outcome debriefs. Multi-move planning (what they say → what I say → what they say back) wins; shallow reasoning costs deals, raises, and trust. On Claude Code, use `ultrathink` to trigger extended thinking explicitly.

**Modes:**

| Mode | Trigger | Action |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Preparation | "I have a [sales call / salary review / annual collective bargaining / hard 1:1 / recruitment close / cross-cultural deal] next week" | Phase 1 detects domain → Phases 1–5 with domain-specific axes |
| Live coach | "They just said X, what do I respond?" | Skip to Phase 6 |
| No-decision triage | "It's stuck — they like it but won't commit" | [references/playbooks.md#jolt](references/playbooks.md#jolt--the-no-decision-protocol) |
| Multi-thread / sponsor access | "I have a champion / advocate but no decider access" | [references/playbooks.md#multi-threading](references/playbooks.md#multi-threading-sequence--from-1-contact-to-47-stakeholders) |
