## What it does

The skill gives the agent an indie hacker frame: one to three people building on their own money, no outside funding. Inside are the definition and a table contrasting this path with the VC route, a phase-by-phase plan for the first 100 users, a content mix for Build in Public, and a channel table showing how well each one fits a solo founder.

Separate sections cover the Pieter Levels playbook (ship fast, charge from day one, automate), the traction triangle of a clear offer, the right channel and social proof, tactics for the Indie Hackers platform, and product types from Micro-SaaS to AI tools, digital products and content. Launch timelines and Product Hunt are handed off to cold-start-strategy; forum and HN tactics go to community-forum. So this skill will not write your launch calendar.

It ships in the marketing-skills collection and installs through `npx skills`. Reach for it once you have decided to grow on revenue and want a channel breakdown rather than a pep talk.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill indie-hacker-strategy -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill indie-hacker -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/indie-hacker/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/indie-hacker/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill indie-hacker -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/indie-hacker/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill indie-hacker -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/indie-hacker/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills indie-hacker
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill indie-hacker -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills --path skills/strategies/launch/indie-hacker
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/indie-hacker/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill indie-hacker -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/strategies/launch/indie-hacker/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick 2–3 growth channels instead of spreading thin
- map the first 100 users phase by phase
- draft a Build in Public content plan
- see how bootstrapping differs from the VC path
- match channels to a product type: Micro-SaaS, AI tool, digital product

## Example prompts
- help me plan growth for my indie hacker product
- lay out how to get the first 100 users for a Micro-SaaS
- what should I post while building in public

# Strategies: Indie Hacker

Guides marketing and growth strategy for **indie hackers** (bootstrapped founders, solo developers)—autonomous, small-team or solo, no external funding. Covers mindset, first users, Build in Public, growth channels, and when to use which skills. For cold start execution (launch timeline, Product Hunt, directory submission), see **cold-start-strategy**. For forum tactics (Indie Hackers, HN, Reddit post structure), see **community-forum**. Full guide (cases, resources) → [Alignify – Indie Hacker Complete Guide](https://alignify.co/zh/insights/indie-hackers).

**When invoking**: On **first use**, if helpful, open with 1–2 sentences on what this skill covers and why it matters, then provide the main output. On **subsequent use** or when the user asks to skip, go directly to the main output.

## Definition

**Indie Hacker** = Bootstrapped founder who builds products autonomously, typically 1–3 people, no external funding. Focus: sustainability, profitability, fast iteration—not VC-scale growth.

| Trait | Indie Hacker | VC-backed |
|-------|--------------|-----------|
| **Funding** | Bootstrapping; product revenue | External investment |
| **Growth** | Sustainable; Ramen profitability first | Scale at all costs |
| **Control** | Full autonomy | Investor reporting |
| **Timeline** | Long game; niche focus | Fast expansion |

## Core Concepts

| Concept | Meaning |
|---------|---------|
| **Bootstrapping** | Self-funded; use product revenue to grow; no equity dilution |
| **MVP** | Minimum viable product; ship fast, validate, iterate |
| **Build in Public** | Share progress, metrics, failures openly; attracts early adopters |
| **Scratch your own itch** | Solve your own problem first; others likely have it too |

## Pieter Levels Playbook

| Tactic | Guideline |
|--------|-----------|
| **Ship fast, fix later** | Launch ugly but functional MVPs; Nomad List started as Google Sheet + Stripe; Photo AI made $150K first week despite initial flaws |
| **Monetize from day one** | Add payment button at launch; validate willingness to pay, not just usage |
| **Automate everything** | Scripts, APIs, no-code; run without employees |
