# indexion-readme

This skill assembles a project README from templates, doc comments and static files, then checks that your edits only added text.

## What it does

The skill covers the construction side of documentation: scaffolding, per-package generation, writing plans, root assembly and verification. Judging documentation you already have is a different skill, `indexion-documentation`.

It works with `doc.json` (at the repo root or under `.indexion/readme/`), a template at `docs/templates/readme.md`, static prose files such as `docs/intro.md` and `docs/installation.md`, and per-package READMEs in `cmd/<name>/README.md`. Running `doc readme --per-package` never overwrites an existing file, and the skeleton it produces is API-only, pulled from `///` doc comments — you still hand-write Overview, Usage, Options and Examples. Verification runs through `plan drift`, which compares the old and new versions and shows what appeared and what disappeared.

Watch out for `doc readme --template=<t> <paths...>`. That mode walks the paths you give it and creates READMEs for packages that lack one, even without `--per-package`. Point it at `cmd/` or `src/` and you get new files in packages you never meant to touch. Use a narrow path, or grep `git status` afterwards.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add trkbt10/indexion-skills --skill indexion-readme -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/indexion-readme/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/indexion-readme/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add trkbt10/indexion-skills --skill indexion-readme -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/indexion-readme/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add trkbt10/indexion-skills --skill indexion-readme -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/indexion-readme/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install trkbt10/indexion-skills indexion-readme
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/indexion-readme/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add trkbt10/indexion-skills --skill indexion-readme -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/trkbt10/indexion-skills --path skills/indexion-readme
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/indexion-readme/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add trkbt10/indexion-skills --skill indexion-readme -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/trkbt10/indexion-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/indexion-readme/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- assemble a root README from static files and per-package READMEs
- generate README skeletons from doc comments without overwriting existing files
- split README writing into per-section tasks with `plan readme`
- confirm a README edit only added text and dropped nothing
- catch an accidental large README rewrite in CI with `--vocab-threshold`

## Example prompts
- Assemble the root README from `doc.json` and list which sections made it into the output
- Generate per-package READMEs for `src/` and `cmd/`, leave existing files alone
- Compare `README.md` against the HEAD version with `plan drift` and tell me what was removed

# indexion readme — README Construction

Build project READMEs from templates, doc comments, hand-written prose, and
per-package READMEs. This skill covers the **construction side**: scaffolding,
generating, planning, assembling, and verifying. For evaluating existing
documentation, see `indexion-documentation`.

## Where things live

The conventions vary by project; check what actually exists before editing:

| Asset | Location patterns seen |
|-------|------------------------|
| Config | `doc.json` (repo root) **or** `.indexion/readme/doc.json` |
| Per-package template | `docs/templates/readme.md` (no SoT constant; declared via `--template`) |
| Static prose | `docs/intro.md`, `docs/installation.md`, `docs/license.md`, … |
| Per-package READMEs | `cmd/<name>/README.md`, `src/<name>/README.md` |
| Assembled root README | usually `README.md`. Some projects use a `.mbt.md` suffix so the file is also a MoonBit doctest module — when so, `README.md` is a symlink to `README.mbt.md`. |
| `.indexion.toml` | `[doc] config_path` / `per_package` auto-load doc.json |

**The first thing to check** is `git diff` / `ls -la` for: a symlink on `README.md`, a `doc.json` (at root or under `.indexion/readme/`), and `.indexion.toml`. The presence of these tells you whether the README is hand-maintained, build-assembled, or a hybrid.

## Workflow overview

```
doc init                      → .indexion/readme/template.md + doc.json (greenfield)
edit doc.json + docs/*.md     → declare sources of truth
doc readme --per-package      → cmd/<pkg>/README.md (API skeletons; non-overwriting)
hand-write each per-package README's Overview / Usage / Options / Examples
doc readme --config           → assembled root README
plan drift <prev> <new>       → verify the assembled output (or hand-edit) is purely additive
```

## Step 1: Initialize (greenfield only)

```bash
indexion doc init <project-dir>
```

Creates `.indexion/readme/template.md` + `.indexion/readme/doc.json`. Skip this step on a project that already has `doc.json` or `.indexion.toml` pointing at one.

## Step 2: Configure doc.json

```json
{
  "$schema": "./schemas/doc-config.schema.json",
  "version": "1.0",
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the e18dd5e86f8cc3d4 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
