# including-generated-files

Helps wire build-generated files into MSBuild compilation or output. Use it when an artifact exists during a build but is not picked up automatically.

## What it does

This skill handles MSBuild cases where a target creates a source file, `Content`, `None`, or another physical artifact that never reaches compilation or the output directory. It explains why globs expanded before the build starts cannot see files created later during target execution.

For generated `.cs` files, it adds paths to `Compile` and `FileWrites` from a target using `BeforeTargets="CoreCompile;BeforeCompile"`. Non-code artifacts can use `None` or `Content`, with timing based on `BeforeBuild` or `AssignTargetPaths`. A glob inside a target runs after the generated files exist.

Generated artifacts should be based on `$(IntermediateOutputPath)` and tracked through `FileWrites` so `Clean` can remove them. Hardcoding `obj\` is a bad choice because the intermediate directory can be redirected. The skill excludes Roslyn source-generator internals and systems outside MSBuild.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill including-generated-files -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/including-generated-files/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/including-generated-files/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill including-generated-files -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/including-generated-files/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill including-generated-files -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/including-generated-files/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills including-generated-files
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/including-generated-files/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill including-generated-files -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/including-generated-files
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/including-generated-files/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill including-generated-files -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dotnet/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/including-generated-files/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- compile a generated `.cs` source file
- copy a generated data file to output
- fix a glob that misses files created during a build
- choose `BeforeTargets` for a generated artifact
- track generated files for `Clean`

## Example prompts
- Help me compile a `.cs` file generated during an MSBuild target.
- Add my generated file to `Compile` before `CoreCompile`.
- Show how to use `$(IntermediateOutputPath)` and `FileWrites` for a generated artifact.

# Including Generated Files Into Your Build

## Overview

Files generated during the build are generally ignored by the build process. This leads to confusing results such as:
- Generated files not being included in the output directory
- Generated source files not being compiled
- Globs not capturing files created during the build

This happens because of how MSBuild's build phases work.

## Quick Takeaway

For code files generated during the build - we need to add those to `Compile` and `FileWrites` item groups within the target generating the file(s):

```xml
  <ItemGroup>
    <Compile Include="$(GeneratedFilePath)" />
    <FileWrites Include="$(GeneratedFilePath)" />
  </ItemGroup>
```

The target generating the file(s) should be hooked before CoreCompile and BeforeCompile targets - `BeforeTargets="CoreCompile;BeforeCompile"`

## Why Generated Files Are Ignored

For detailed explanation, see [How MSBuild Builds Projects](https://docs.microsoft.com/visualstudio/msbuild/build-process-overview).

### Evaluation Phase

MSBuild reads your project, imports everything, creates Properties, expands globs for Items **outside of Targets**, and sets up the build process.

### Execution Phase

MSBuild runs Targets & Tasks with the provided Properties & Items to perform the build.

**Key Takeaway:** Files generated during execution don't exist during evaluation, therefore they aren't found. This particularly affects files that are globbed by default, such as source files (`.cs`).

## Solution: Manually Add Generated Files

When files are generated during the build, manually add them into the build process. The approach depends on the type of file being generated.

### Use `$(IntermediateOutputPath)` for Generated File Location
