# improve-retention

A skill that digs into why users sign up and then disappear, and points at what to fix in onboarding. Useful when the retention curve sags and the cause is unclear.

## What it does

The skill runs on the Fogg Behavior Model: B=MAP. A behavior happens when motivation, ability and a prompt land at the same moment. If one of the three is missing, nothing happens — and the skill helps you find which one.

Inside are six Quick Diagnostic rows with a 10-point score. A failing motivation row or a behavior sitting below the Action Line costs 2 points each; prompts, celebration, bottleneck and scaling cost 1.5 each. There is also the Ability Chain across six factors: time, money, physical effort, mental effort, social deviance and non-routine. The weakest link is your bottleneck, so the rest can wait.

The skill points to two neighbours: `hooked-ux` for habit loops and variable rewards, `drive-motivation` for intrinsic motivation. Reach for those when the question is about them. Scoring needs real behavior data — activation numbers and cohort curves — otherwise the rows stay blank, so gather those first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-retention -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/improve-retention/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/improve-retention/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-retention -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/improve-retention/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-retention -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/improve-retention/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wondelai/skills improve-retention
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/improve-retention/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-retention -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wondelai/skills --path improve-retention
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/improve-retention/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-retention -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- find out why users quit after their first session
- locate the weakest link in the Ability Chain and cut steps
- design an activation milestone for new users
- shorten time-to-value during onboarding
- score a design against the six diagnostic rows and see what fails

## Example prompts
- users sign up but don't come back on day two — walk me through B=MAP
- score our onboarding with the retention diagnostic and name the failing rows
- where is the bottleneck in our Ability Chain before the first key action?

# Behavior Design Framework

Framework for designing products that reliably change behavior. Behavior is not about willpower or motivation — it is a design problem with a predictable equation.

## Core Principle

**The Fogg Behavior Model** = B=MAP. Behavior happens when Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt converge at the same moment.

```
            HIGH ┃
                 ┃   ★ Behavior happens
                 ┃  (above the Action Line)
                 ┃
  Motivation     ┃━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ← Action Line
                 ┃
                 ┃   ✗ Behavior fails
                 ┃  (below the Action Line)
            LOW  ┃
                 ┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
                 HARD                    EASY
                        Ability
```

**The Action Line:** When motivation and ability are sufficient, a prompt causes the behavior; below the line, no prompt works. High motivation compensates for low ability and vice versa. The reliable strategy is making behaviors easier (move right), not pumping up motivation (move up).

See: [references/behavior-model.md](references/behavior-model.md) when you need the curve mechanics behind this model — the full Action Line math, behavior types (dot/span/path), and a step-by-step failure diagnostic for a behavior that isn't happening.
