# improve-code-quality

Guides untested prototypes toward production code with tests, clean boundaries, and system resilience. Useful when code works but feels too fragile to touch.

## What it does

The skill coordinates nine distinct phases, starting with a test safety net before touching internal structure. At every decision point, the agent questions you and logs choices into Markdown files under `docs/`. These include `IMPROVE-CODE-QUALITY-PLAN.md`, `TESTING.md`, and `TECH-DEBT.md`. You can pause and resume anytime.

Under the hood, it orchestrates specialized skills such as clean-architecture and release-it. If a referenced skill is missing locally, the agent offers an `npx skills add` command or falls back to a minimal brief mode. Phase 1 acts as a strict gate. Modifying uncovered code is prohibited, keeping behavioral updates and structural refactoring in separate commits.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-code-quality -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/improve-code-quality/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/improve-code-quality/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-code-quality -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/improve-code-quality/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-code-quality -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/improve-code-quality/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wondelai/skills improve-code-quality
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/improve-code-quality/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-code-quality -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wondelai/skills --path improve-code-quality
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/improve-code-quality/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wondelai/skills --skill improve-code-quality -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wondelai/skills/tree/HEAD/improve-code-quality/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build safety net tests before refactoring code
- separate core business rules from external frameworks
- track technical debt and testing roadmaps inside docs
- verify database durability and concurrency handling

## Example prompts
- Run improve-code-quality to turn this prototype into production code.
- This script works on my machine but I am scared to touch it, let's harden it.
- Resume the code quality review from docs/IMPROVE-CODE-QUALITY-PLAN.md.

Orchestrates nine skills phase by phase - working-with-legacy-code, clean-code, refactoring-patterns, software-design-philosophy, clean-architecture, pragmatic-programmer, release-it, system-design, ddia-systems - asking the user questions at every decision point and recording results in the project docs/ folder (TESTING.md, TECH-DEBT.md, IMPROVE-CODE-QUALITY-PLAN.md) so the journey resumes across sessions. Use when the user wants to harden an AI-generated prototype, add tests before refactoring, make code safe to change, or says ''this works on my machine but I am scared to touch it''. For an aged codebase, remove-technical-debt; for greenfield structure, design-code-architecture; for a product and UX pass, improve-app; to optimize speed and structure, architecture-optimization. For one framework in isolation, invoke that skill directly.'

# Improve Code Quality

Turn a working-but-untested vibe-coded prototype into a product you can ship and operate. This is an
interactive, resumable journey of nine phases: the agent asks before every decision and records the
outcome in your project's `docs/` folder, so you can stop after any phase and pick up later. A
week-old prototype is already legacy code — so the first move is a safety net, and every phase after
it is verifiable because of that net.

## Core Principle

**A week-old untested prototype is already legacy code: flip tactical to strategic — safety net
first, then readability, structure, and production hardening in order.** This skill sequences the
phases, asks the decision questions, and records every choice in `docs/`. The constituent skills
carry the method — invoke them rather than improvising their frameworks. Skipping ahead (refactoring
before tests, scaling before sizing) is the exact failure mode this ordering exists to prevent.

## Journey Map

| Phase | Skill | Question it answers | Artifact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | working-with-legacy-code | Can I change this code without breaking it unknowingly? | Creates docs/TESTING.md + docs/TECH-DEBT.md — GATE |
| 2 | clean-code | Is this readable to the next person (and agent)? | Extends docs/TECH-DEBT.md |
| 3 | refactoring-patterns | Can I reshape structure without changing behavior? | Extends docs/TECH-DEBT.md |
| 4 | software-design-philosophy | Is complexity hidden behind deep modules? | Extends docs/TECH-DEBT.md |
| 5 | clean-architecture | Do business rules depend on the framework, or vice versa? | Extends docs/ARCHITECTURE.md |
| 6 | pragmatic-programmer | What habits keep it clean after we stop? | Extends docs/TECH-DEBT.md |
| 7 | release-it | Will it survive a hostile production? | Creates docs/RELIABILITY.md |
