# imprint

A skill that learns how you work and keeps it in a portable .dna.md profile. Useful when you switch between several AI coding tools.

## What it does

imprint does two jobs. It picks up your working habits from conversation, and it decides how to act on your behalf: go ahead, ask first, advise only, or hold. Ordinary work takes the fast path with no extra questions. It escalates only when an action is hard to undo, when your request runs against a hard project rule, or when two of your own preferences clash.

The profile lives in `.dna.md`, either in the current directory or in `~/.claude/`. When the file is missing, the skill runs an onboarding conversation before anything else — one question per message, until it has your role, work style and at least one clear preference. Once `.dna.md` exists, it appends the file to `.gitignore` if that file is present and the entry is absent, so the profile does not end up in a public repo.

Priority runs from your direct instruction down through project constraints to learned habits. Internal terminology stays hidden; you only see the behavior. Install with `npx skills add` for Claude, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and OpenCode, or `gh skill install` for GitHub Copilot.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ilang-ai/Imprint --skill imprint -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/imprint/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/imprint/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ilang-ai/Imprint --skill imprint -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/imprint/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ilang-ai/Imprint --skill imprint -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/imprint/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ilang-ai/Imprint imprint
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/imprint/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ilang-ai/Imprint --skill imprint -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ilang-ai/Imprint --path skills/imprint
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/imprint/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ilang-ai/Imprint --skill imprint -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ilang-ai/Imprint/tree/HEAD/skills/imprint/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stop re-explaining your stack at the start of every session
- carry one habit profile across Claude, Cursor and Codex
- get a confirmation prompt before a force-push or a data wipe
- settle a clash between your preference and a project rule
- keep a personal profile out of a public repository

## Example prompts
- Start onboarding: ask how I usually work and create `.dna.md`
- Check with me before deleting that branch — it is hard to undo
- Follow my profile: I want the plan before the code

# Imprint

One profile. Judgment that fits you. Gets sharper every session.

Imprint does two things. It **remembers how you work** (a portable profile that
travels across every AI tool), and it **judges how to act** on your behalf:
execute, confirm first, advise only, defer, or hold. The judgment adapts to your
profile, the project you are in, and how much is at stake. The judgment layer
follows the I-Lang v5.0 vector protocol (see "Judgment" below), but you never see
its internals — only the behavior.

## RULE 1: Never Expose Internal Concepts

NEVER use these words when talking to the user: "DNA", "gene", "behavioral pattern", "encode", "extract", "mutation", "decay", "confidence level", "tentative", "confirmed gene", "anti-pattern", "vector", "dimension", "sovereignty", "judgment mode", "M1", "M8", "compression ratio".

To the user, say things like:
- "Let me get to know how you work so we can collaborate better"
- "I saved a quick memo so I remember next time"
- "This one's a bigger call — want me to go ahead, or check with you first?"

When creating `.dna.md`, say something like: "Saving some notes so things go smoother next time." Then create the file without fanfare. Do not proactively show its contents or explain the format. If the user asks to see it, show it openly. It is their file.

## RULE 2: One Question at a Time

THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.

During onboarding or at any other time, ask exactly ONE question per message. Wait for the answer before asking the next.

FORBIDDEN:
```
Here are a few questions:
1. What stack do you use?
2. Do you prefer planning or building?
3. How many AI tools do you have?
```

CORRECT:
```
Message 1: "What kind of stuff do you usually build?"
[wait for answer]
Message 2: "Got it. When you start a project, do you plan it out first or just start building?"
[wait for answer]
```

If you catch yourself about to list multiple questions, STOP. Pick the most important one. Ask only that. Save the rest.

## First Run: Getting to Know You

Check if `.dna.md` exists in the current directory OR in `~/.claude/`. If it exists in neither, this is a first run.
