## What it does

Give the skill a paper and it produces a notebook. The paper ID is parsed out of whatever you paste: an `arxiv.org/abs/...` link, a `pdf` link, an alphaxiv.org overview page, or a bare number such as `2401.12345v2`. The first call goes to `https://alphaxiv.org/overview/{PAPER_ID}.md`, which returns a markdown analysis. When a specific equation, table or proof is missing there, the skill pulls the extracted full text from `https://alphaxiv.org/abs/{PAPER_ID}.md`. Both endpoints are public, so no key is involved.

The hard part is picking the story, not writing code. A paper usually carries several ideas; the skill keeps one and drops the rest. Reimplementing everything or rerunning a large benchmark is out of scope. What you get is a notebook that runs on a CPU and leaves the reader with a single takeaway, often a side-by-side of two approaches with one or two charts, sometimes a dropdown or slider for settings. Scrolling should stay minimal.

Notebook assembly goes through the `marimo-notebook` skill. A custom `anywidget` is pulled in only when it genuinely helps the explanation. In the finished file the code is hidden and the input and output cells sit at the top. If the overview has not been generated yet, that first request returns 404 and the skill falls back to the full text; a 404 there leaves only the PDF at `https://arxiv.org/pdf/{PAPER_ID}`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marimo-team/skills --skill implement-paper-auto -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/implement-paper-auto/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/implement-paper-auto/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marimo-team/skills --skill implement-paper-auto -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/implement-paper-auto/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marimo-team/skills --skill implement-paper-auto -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/implement-paper-auto/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install marimo-team/skills implement-paper-auto
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/implement-paper-auto/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marimo-team/skills --skill implement-paper-auto -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/marimo-team/skills --path skills/implement-paper-auto
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/implement-paper-auto/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add marimo-team/skills --skill implement-paper-auto -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/marimo-team/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/implement-paper-auto/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- turn an arXiv paper into a notebook you can actually run
- pick one idea from a paper that fits a short example
- build a two-approach comparison with a chart and a couple of controls
- hide the code and move input and output cells to the top
- skip reading the raw PDF

## Example prompts
- Build a marimo notebook from https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.12345
- Implement the idea in 2401.12345v2 as a notebook with the code hidden
- Make an interactive example from the paper at alphaxiv.org/overview/2401.12345

You need to come up with a compelling story to tell from a paper. Do not ask the user for feedback/input. You need to apply thinking and come up with the best story yourself.

# Fetching Papers via AlphaXiv

Use alphaxiv.org to get structured, LLM-friendly paper content. This is faster and more reliable than trying to read a raw PDF.

## Extract the paper ID

Parse the paper ID from whatever the user provides:

| Input | Paper ID |
|-------|----------|
| `https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.12345` | `2401.12345` |
| `https://arxiv.org/pdf/2401.12345` | `2401.12345` |
| `https://alphaxiv.org/overview/2401.12345` | `2401.12345` |
| `2401.12345v2` | `2401.12345v2` |
| `2401.12345` | `2401.12345` |

## Fetch the AI-generated overview (try this first)

```bash
curl -s "https://alphaxiv.org/overview/{PAPER_ID}.md"
```

Returns a structured, detailed analysis of the paper as plain markdown. One call, no JSON parsing.

## Fetch the full paper text (fallback)

If the overview doesn't contain the specific detail you need (e.g., a particular equation, table, or proof):

```bash
curl -s "https://alphaxiv.org/abs/{PAPER_ID}.md"
```

Returns the full extracted text of the paper as markdown.

## Error handling

- **404 on the overview**: Report hasn't been generated for this paper yet. Try the full text instead.
- **404 on the full text**: Text hasn't been processed yet. As a last resort, direct the user to the PDF at `https://arxiv.org/pdf/{PAPER_ID}`.
- No authentication is required — these are public endpoints.

## What is a good implementation?

A good implementation tells a story, that's the most important thing. The story should be simple, but it should not be missing.

Papers typically have more than one concept in them. So that means you need to pick a story! It isn't the goal to fully implement the paper or to rerun a giant benchmark. The goal is to take a lesson/idea and to explain that very clearly in a notebook that can simply run on a CPU. That way, a user can easily run learn something from it. When you look at the notebook, what is the main concept or idea that you think is worth exploring? What is the concept that tells a story?
