## What it does

This skill handles the image chores in a web project: shrink a hero shot, strip the white border off a client logo, turn PNGs into WebP, cut thumbnails, or build a 1200x630 OG card with a title on it. The work goes through `img-process`, a CLI shipped in `bin/`, so the agent stops writing a fresh script for every standard operation.

For anything the CLI does not cover — compositing, watermarks, tricky text layouts — the skill generates a Pillow script tuned to your setup. The reference patterns are concrete: format-specific save quality, aspect-ratio resize with `Image.LANCZOS`, whitespace trim via `getbbox()`, and font discovery across macOS, Linux and Windows. One gotcha worth knowing: JPG has no alpha, so RGBA images get composited onto white before saving.

Install Pillow first: `pip install Pillow`. Without it neither `img-process` nor a custom script will run. The skill lists fallbacks — `sips` on macOS, `sharp` for Node.js, `ffmpeg` — but they skip trim and OG card generation. Check what you actually have before pointing the agent at a batch of images.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill image-processing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/image-processing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/image-processing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill image-processing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/image-processing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill image-processing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/image-processing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills image-processing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/image-processing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill image-processing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills --path plugins/design-assets/skills/image-processing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/image-processing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill image-processing -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- shrink a hero image to 1920 wide and compress it
- strip the white background from a client-supplied logo JPG
- convert a folder of PNGs to WebP in one pass
- generate 200px thumbnails for a product grid
- build an OG card with a title and subtitle

## Example prompts
- resize hero.jpg to 1920 wide and save it as webp
- trim the whitespace off logo-raw.jpg and make a 512 favicon
- create an OG card 1200x630 with the title "My App"

# Image Processing

Use `img-process` (shipped in `bin/`) for common operations. For complex or custom workflows, generate a Pillow script adapted to the user's environment.

## Quick Reference — img-process CLI

```bash
img-process resize hero.png --width 1920
img-process convert logo.png --format webp
img-process trim logo-raw.jpg -o logo-clean.png --padding 10
img-process thumbnail photo.jpg --size 200
img-process optimise hero.jpg --quality 85 --max-width 1920
img-process og-card -o og.png --title "My App" --subtitle "Built for speed"
img-process batch ./images --action convert --format webp -o ./optimised
```

**Use `img-process` when**: the operation is standard (resize, convert, trim, thumbnail, optimise, OG card, batch). This is faster and avoids generating a script each time.

**Generate a custom script when**: the operation needs logic `img-process` doesn't cover (compositing multiple images, watermarks, complex text layouts, conditional processing).

## Prerequisites

Pillow is required for both `img-process` and custom scripts:

```bash
pip install Pillow
```

If Pillow is unavailable, use alternatives:

| Alternative | Platform | Install | Best for |
|-------------|----------|---------|----------|
| `sips` | macOS (built-in) | None | Resize, convert (no trim/OG) |
| `sharp` | Node.js | `npm install sharp` | Full feature set, high performance |
| `ffmpeg` | Cross-platform | `brew install ffmpeg` | Resize, convert |

## Output Format Guide

| Use case | Format | Why |
|----------|--------|-----|
| Photos, hero images | WebP | Best compression, wide browser support |
| Logos, icons (need transparency) | PNG | Lossless, supports alpha |
| Fallback for older browsers | JPG | Universal support |
| Thumbnails | WebP or JPG | Small file size priority |
| OG cards | PNG | Social platforms handle PNG best |

## Core Patterns

### Save with Format-Specific Quality

Different formats need different save parameters. Always handle RGBA-to-JPG compositing — JPG does not support transparency, so composite onto a white background first.

```python
from PIL import Image
import os
def save_image(img, output_path, quality=None):
````
