## What it does

This skill applies image optimization practices targeting Google Search, Google Images, and Core Web Vitals. It checks the page layout first. The instructions separate hero banners from galleries, product thumbnails, and trust badges. If a `contextus.md` file exists in the repository root, the agent loads only related modules.

The focus stays on standard HTML markup. Google does not index images declared in CSS via `background-image`. Because of that, the skill requires native `img` and `picture` elements with explicit fallback `src` paths. For compression, it guides conversion to WebP or AVIF with quality set between 75 and 85. The guide strictly prohibits `loading="lazy"` on above-the-fold assets because lazy loading a hero element degrades your LCP score.

To help crawlers find unlinked assets, the skill generates image XML sitemaps that support CDN URLs. It also formats descriptive alt attributes up to 125 characters without keyword stuffing and enforces hyphenated file names.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill image-optimization -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/image-optimization/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/image-optimization/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill image-optimization -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/image-optimization/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill image-optimization -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/image-optimization/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills image-optimization
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/image-optimization/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill image-optimization -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**

## When to use it
- configure responsive picture and srcset tags with fallback sources
- remove lazy loading from above-the-fold hero images to preserve LCP
- generate dedicated XML image sitemaps including CDN assets
- draft descriptive alt text under 125 characters without keyword stuffing
- convert site imagery to WebP or AVIF formats

## Example prompts
- Review our homepage img elements and configure srcset with WebP
- Optimize the hero banner for Core Web Vitals and LCP
- Generate an image sitemap for assets hosted on our CDN

# SEO On-Page: Image Optimization

Guides image optimization for Google Search (text results, Image Pack, Google Images, Discover), Core Web Vitals (LCP), and accessibility. Consolidates image-related best practices from components (hero, trust-badges) and pages (landing-page). **When invoking**: On **first use**, if helpful, open with 1–2 sentences on what this skill covers and why it matters, then provide the main output. On **subsequent use** or when the user asks to skip, go directly to the main output.

## Scope

- **Discovery & indexing**: HTML img elements, image sitemap
- **Format & performance**: WebP, responsive images, lazy loading, LCP; full CWV optimization in **core-web-vitals**
- **Metadata**: Alt text, file names, captions
- **Preferred image**: primaryImageOfPage, og:image; thumbnail next to title/description in search results
- **Structured data**: ImageObject, image in Article/Product/etc.

## Initial Assessment

**Project context:** Read root `contextus.md` when present and load only the modules relevant to this task. Without Contextus, use available project material or user-provided facts and ask for missing information; do not create a parallel context system.

Identify:
1. **Context**: Hero, content page, product, trust badge, social preview
2. **Above vs below fold**: LCP candidate (hero) vs lazy-loadable
3. **Image count**: Single hero vs gallery, programmatic pages

## 1. Discovery & Indexing

### Use HTML Image Elements

Google finds images in the `src` attribute of `<img>` (including inside `<picture>`). **CSS background images are not indexed.**

| Do | Don't |
|----|-------|
| `<img src="puppy.jpg" alt="Golden retriever puppy" />` | `<div style="background-image:url(puppy.jpg)">` |
