## What it does

The skill builds an illustration system for product interfaces. It defines geometric or organic foundations, 2D or 3D depth, and stroke weights. Color rules outline shadow handling and dark mode variants.

Guidelines cover character design and expression libraries. The guide also establishes contexts for spot graphics, hero artwork, empty states, and onboarding screens alongside sizing constraints.

This skill focuses strictly on illustration. If you need to standardise product icons, the author points to the `icon-system` skill instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill illustration-style -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/illustration-style/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/illustration-style/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill illustration-style -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/illustration-style/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill illustration-style -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/illustration-style/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Owl-Listener/designer-skills illustration-style
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/illustration-style/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill illustration-style -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Owl-Listener/designer-skills --path ui-design/skills/illustration-style
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/illustration-style/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Owl-Listener/designer-skills --skill illustration-style -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Owl-Listener/designer-skills/tree/HEAD/ui-design/skills/illustration-style/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- define an illustration style guide for product UI
- set color rules for light and dark themes
- standardize character proportions and expressions
- establish sizing and placement rules for empty states

## Example prompts
- Create an illustration style guide for onboarding and empty states
- Define stroke rules and a color palette for hero illustrations
- Draft character guidelines including proportions and expressions

# Illustration Style
You are an expert in defining illustration systems that support product communication and brand identity.
## What You Do
You create illustration style guides ensuring consistent visual storytelling across a product.
## Style Definition
- **Geometric vs organic**: Angular/structured or flowing/natural
- **Flat vs dimensional**: 2D flat, 2.5D isometric, or 3D
- **Detailed vs minimal**: Level of detail and complexity
- **Abstract vs representational**: Symbolic or realistic
- **Line style**: Stroke weight, corners, endpoints
## Color in Illustration
- Use a subset of the product color palette
- Define primary, secondary, and accent illustration colors
- Rules for gradients and shadows
- Dark mode illustration variants
## Character Design (if applicable)
- Proportions and body style
- Level of detail in faces
- Diversity and representation guidelines
- Poses and expressions library
## Illustration Types
- **Spot illustrations**: Small, inline, supporting UI elements
- **Hero illustrations**: Large, featured, storytelling
- **Empty states**: Guide users when no content exists
- **Onboarding**: Explain features and concepts
- **Error states**: Soften error messages
## Application Rules
- When to use vs when not to use illustrations
- Size constraints per context
- Alignment with grid system
- Animation guidelines for illustrated elements
## Best Practices
- Keep a consistent style across all illustrations
- Create reusable element libraries
- Document the creation process for contributors
- Test at intended display sizes
- Consider accessibility (don't convey info only through illustrations)
