## What it does

This research skill identifies which short-form videos genuinely outperform an account's baseline. Instead of relying on raw view counts, it ranks reels by an outlier multiple: views divided by the account's recent median. Anything exceeding 3x indicates a repeatable pattern, while anything under 1.5x is disregarded as regular baseline performance.

The workflow reviews 6 to 12 target profiles within roughly 10x of the creator's follower count. It inspects reels using active session browser tools or manual user inputs without automated bulk scraping or credential requests. When Instagram data is limited, it can pull spoken hooks from YouTube Shorts using `yt-dlp`. Results are processed through `python3 swipe.py captured.tsv --out ~/.claude/instagram/swipe.md` against 26 predefined hook patterns.

The skill fails to deliver if Python 3 is absent or if you expect automated background scraping, because it strictly reads pages at human speed and avoids private APIs. Output writes directly to `~/.claude/instagram/swipe.md`, supplying context for downstream script drafting in `/ig-reel`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/instagram-agent-skill --skill ig-viral -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ig-viral/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ig-viral/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/instagram-agent-skill --skill ig-viral -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ig-viral/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/instagram-agent-skill --skill ig-viral -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ig-viral/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Jakeschincariol/instagram-agent-skill ig-viral
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ig-viral/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/instagram-agent-skill --skill ig-viral -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/instagram-agent-skill --path skills/ig-viral
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ig-viral/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/instagram-agent-skill --skill ig-viral -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- identify outlier short-form reels beating account median views
- extract spoken and on-screen hook formulas from competitors
- isolate structural patterns in high-performing videos
- generate tailored hook versions ready for production

## Example prompts
- Find viral videos in my niche and break down why they worked
- Build me a swipe file from these competitor accounts
- Why is this reel doing numbers compared to their usual posts?

The research skill. Everything else in this pack writes; this one goes and
looks. Run it monthly, not daily. Formulas last a season.

One tool lives in this folder and it runs:

```bash
python3 swipe.py captured.tsv --out ~/.claude/instagram/swipe.md
```

## The one idea that makes this worth doing

**Raw views are not evidence.** An account with two million followers doing
400,000 views had a quiet Tuesday. An account with four thousand followers
doing 400,000 views found something, and that something is copyable.

So everything here ranks on the **outlier multiple**: views divided by that
account's own recent median. Anything above 3x is a signal. Anything below 1.5x
is that account's normal day and it teaches you nothing, no matter how big the
number looks.

Collect accounts **within about 10x of the user's own size**. A formula that
works at 2M followers often works because it is at 2M followers.

## Step 1: pick the accounts

Ask the user for 6 to 12 accounts, or propose them and get approval:

- **4 direct** - same niche, same offer, slightly ahead.
- **4 adjacent** - different niche, same audience. This is where formats get
  borrowed from before anybody in the niche has them.
- **2 to 4 outsized** - much bigger accounts, for format only, never for
  cadence or tone.

Also ask them to open their own **Saved collection**. It is the fastest and
most relevant corpus that exists and it is already filtered by their taste.

## Step 2: go and look

Use whatever browsing tool this session actually has: an in-app browser, a
browser extension connected to the user's own Chrome, or a computer-use tool.
There is no API for this and there does not need to be, because the volume is
small enough to read.

**Rules that are not negotiable:**

- **Never log into Instagram on the user's behalf and never ask for a
  password.** If a page needs a login, the user is the one who is already
  logged in. Drive their browser with them present, or ask them to paste.
- **This is reading, not scraping.** Ten accounts, a dozen reels each, at human
