## What it does

This skill treats denial as a plot engine. It lays out a spectrum of denial levels, from surface denial ("I'm not like them" while acting exactly like them) to desperate denial, where the character works harder to prove difference as evidence piles up. Identity types under denial get their own table: moral, social, psychological, relational, professional.

The arc runs through fixed stages: inception point, justification phase, escalation markers, mirror moments, crisis, and resolution types. There is a justification ladder that climbs from "just this once" to "it's who I am", plus a set of truth-mirror characters who name what the protagonist denies. The source text cuts off inside the visual and symbolic language section, so the remaining implementation techniques are only partly described.

The skill is generative. It does not check a finished draft; it hands you a scaffold for marking up scenes. Reach for it when your character already does things that contradict their self-image and you need to know where the turn belongs. Genre sections cover crime and noir, psychological thriller, family drama, and horror.

```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/identity-denial/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/identity-denial/
### Codex
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill identity-denial -a codex
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/identity-denial/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
### Cursor
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill identity-denial -a cursor
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/identity-denial/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
### GitHub Copilot
1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills identity-denial
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/identity-denial/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill identity-denial -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- map a character arc where the hero never admits the change
- stack justifications in rising order, from one-time excuse to identity
- cast mirror characters who say the truth out loud
- pick a resolution: collapse, dark acceptance, recognition, or delusional victory
- hold tension between a character's self-image and their actions

## Example prompts
- Map the denial arc for a character who started taking bribes but still calls himself honest
- Show the justification ladder for someone who only stole from bad people at first
- Suggest mirror characters for a story about a man denying his addiction

# Identity Denial: Transformation Arc Skill

You help writers create compelling narratives centered on protagonists who refuse to acknowledge what they are becoming. This framework explores how denial operates as both character trait and plot engine.

## Core Pattern

The Identity Denial Arc centers on tension between self-perception and reality. The protagonist insists "I'm not X" while exhibiting increasingly undeniable X behavior.

## The Denial Spectrum

| Level | Description | Example |
|-------|-------------|---------|
| **Surface Denial** | "I'm not like them" while exhibiting identical behaviors | Walter White's "I'm not a drug dealer" |
| **Rationalized Denial** | Complex justifications for why actions don't define identity | "I only steal from bad people" |
| **Projected Denial** | Condemning in others what they refuse to see in themselves | Judging corruption while being corrupt |
| **Desperate Denial** | Increasingly frantic attempts to prove difference as evidence mounts | Elaborate schemes to prove innocence |

## Identity Types Under Denial

| Type | Core Phrase | Examples |
|------|-------------|----------|
| **Moral Identity** | "I'm not a bad person" | Thief, killer, corrupt official |
| **Social Identity** | "I'm not one of them" | Class, profession, group membership |
| **Psychological Identity** | "I'm not sick/broken/changed" | Mental health, addiction, trauma |
| **Relational Identity** | "I'm not like my parent" | Inherited patterns, family dynamics |
| **Professional Identity** | "I'm not really a [X]" | The career they're actually doing |

## The Transformation Arc Structure

### 1. Inception Point
First action that contradicts self-image
- The "just this once" moment
- Often framed as necessity or exception
- Protagonist maintains full self-concept

### 2. Justification Phase
Temporary/necessary/different excuses
- "Just until the situation changes"
- "Only when absolutely necessary"
- "I had no choice"
- Each excuse requires slightly more cognitive work

### 3. Escalation Markers
Each transgression normalized, stakes raised
