## What it does

This skill turns a broad research direction into concrete ideas and ranks them for follow-up work. It is aimed at exploring possible research directions rather than answering a single narrow question.

Its first phase runs an inline landscape survey with `WebSearch`. Later checks call `/novelty-check`, `/run-experiment`, and `/monitor-experiment`, while idea-stage materials go to `idea-stage/`.

Codex MCP is the default review backend; manual review depends on Manual Review MCP. It runs at most `3` pilots in parallel and caps their total GPU budget at `8` hours, so you should narrow the shortlist before requesting pilots.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill idea-creator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/idea-creator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/idea-creator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill idea-creator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/idea-creator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill idea-creator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/idea-creator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep idea-creator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/idea-creator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill idea-creator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/idea-creator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/idea-creator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill idea-creator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/idea-creator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate research ideas from a broad topic
- rank candidate directions for follow-up
- check an idea for novelty
- run pilot experiments for selected ideas
- save idea-stage outputs in `idea-stage/`

## Example prompts
- Generate and rank research ideas for training models on small datasets.
- Brainstorm publishable directions in model interpretability.
- What research ideas can we pursue for this topic?

Generate publishable research ideas for: $ARGUMENTS

## Overview

Given a broad research direction from the user, systematically generate, validate, and rank concrete research ideas. Standalone, Phase 1's landscape survey is **inline** (WebSearch — it does not invoke `/research-lit`); Phases 4-5 invoke `/novelty-check`, `/run-experiment`, and `/monitor-experiment` for validation and pilots. For the full sub-skill pipeline (`/research-lit` → idea generation → `/novelty-check` → `/research-review`), run `/idea-discovery` (Workflow 1), which orchestrates this skill.

## Constants

Reviewer overrides apply to Phase 4 and reviewer-bearing children. Phase 2
brainstorming and native lens workers keep their existing generation model; do
not pass a selected MCP reviewer model into a native generation call.

- **PILOT_MAX_HOURS = 2** — Skip any pilot estimated to take > 2 hours per GPU. Flag as "needs manual pilot".
- **PILOT_TIMEOUT_HOURS = 3** — Hard timeout: kill pilots exceeding 3 hours. Collect partial results if available.
- **MAX_PILOT_IDEAS = 3** — Pilot at most 3 ideas in parallel. Additional ideas are validated on paper only.
- **MAX_TOTAL_GPU_HOURS = 8** — Total GPU budget for all pilots combined.
