## What it does

A Distribution Day here means the close fell at least 0.2% from the prior close while volume rose. A day drops out of the active tally once 25 trading sessions pass, or once the index climbs 5% above that day's close. The skill reports `d5`, `d15` and `d25` clusters, counting active records whose age is at most N sessions — so N+1 sessions get inspected.

Those counts feed a risk grade: NORMAL, CAUTION, HIGH or SEVERE. With both indexes loaded, QQQ carries the weight. One SEVERE pushes the overall grade to SEVERE, a QQQ HIGH lifts it to HIGH, and even QQQ NORMAL alongside SPY HIGH still lands on HIGH because the weakness is broad. The grade maps to an exposure suggestion — SEVERE puts TQQQ at 25% with a trailing stop capped at 3%, while QQQ follows a gentler scale. Nothing gets traded; the output is a risk note.

Price history comes from FMP through `get_historical_prices`, so an FMP API key is required. The skill looks for it in `--api-key` first, then `config.data.api_key`, then the `FMP_API_KEY` environment variable. A free plan with 250 calls a day covers a daily QQQ plus SPY run. Sessions skipped over unreliable volume are flagged as warnings rather than counted as Distribution Days. JSON and Markdown reports land in `reports/` or whatever `--output-dir` points to, with API keys stripped out.

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill ibd-distribution-day-monitor -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ibd-distribution-day-monitor/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add tradermonty/claude-trading-skills --skill ibd-distribution-day-monitor -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ibd-distribution-day-monitor/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

## When to use it
- tally Distribution Days across QQQ and SPY after the close
- drop days older than 25 sessions or cancelled by a 5% gain
- group active records into d5, d15 and d25 clusters
- read off a market risk grade and a target TQQQ share
- replay a past session with `--as-of`

## Example prompts
- Run ibd-distribution-day-monitor on QQQ and SPY for today and tell me the risk grade.
- Count the Distribution Days and say how much TQQQ to hold at 100% exposure with a 10% base stop.
- Check the setup for 2024-08-05 with `--as-of` and list which dates are in the active count.

# IBD Distribution Day Monitor

## Purpose
Detect IBD-style Distribution Days for major market ETFs (QQQ as Nasdaq proxy, SPY as S&P 500 proxy) and produce a daily market deterioration signal plus a TQQQ/QQQ exposure recommendation. Designed for post-market review.

## When to Use
Invoke this skill:
- Daily after the US market close.
- Before increasing TQQQ exposure or rebalancing leveraged positions.
- When evaluating whether an uptrend is becoming vulnerable to a correction.
- As an upstream input to FTD (Follow-Through Day) detection or other market-state frameworks.

Do NOT use this skill to:
- Execute trades or modify orders.
- Generate discretionary market predictions outside of the IBD ruleset.

## Inputs
- Symbols (default: QQQ, SPY) and lookback (default 80 trading sessions).
- Optional `--as-of YYYY-MM-DD` for backtesting against a historical session.
- Strategy context: instrument (TQQQ or QQQ), current exposure %, base trailing stop %.
- FMP API key via `--api-key`, `config.data.api_key`, or `FMP_API_KEY` env var (in that priority order).

## Core Rules
A Distribution Day is detected when:
1. Today's close is at least 0.2% below yesterday's close.
2. Today's volume is greater than yesterday's volume.

A Distribution Day is removed from the active count when either:
- More than 25 trading sessions have elapsed since the DD.
- The index has gained 5% from the DD close (using post-DD high by default; configurable to close-source).
