## What it does

The skill kicks in when you ask your agent to build a 3D hero section, animate a Three.js scene, play or crossfade GLTF clips, tie the camera to scroll, render thousands of objects with `InstancedMesh`, or wire up bloom and DOF. What you get is working code rather than general advice: a minimal scene on `setAnimationLoop`, an `AnimationMixer` with crossfading actions, exponential camera damping, instancing with `setMatrixAt`.

A separate section covers GPU leaks. Geometries, materials and textures live on the video card, and the garbage collector will not touch them. Skip `.dispose()` and VRAM climbs on every mount until the context drops and the canvas goes black. The skill spells out what to free on unmount and what to leave alone.

It ships for Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Install is a single `npx skills add` line, with a separate `gh skill install` route for Copilot. No API keys or external services are involved, since everything runs against your local project code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills --skill threejs-animation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/threejs-animation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/threejs-animation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills --skill threejs-animation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/threejs-animation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills --skill threejs-animation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/threejs-animation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills threejs-animation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/threejs-animation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills --skill threejs-animation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills --path skills/threejs-animation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/threejs-animation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills --skill threejs-animation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/iart-ai/webgl-animation-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/threejs-animation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build an animated 3D hero section with Three.js
- play and crossfade clips from a GLTF model
- link camera movement to page scroll
- render thousands of objects in one draw call via InstancedMesh
- free GPU memory when a scene unmounts

## Example prompts
- Build a Three.js hero section with a rotating icosahedron and a capped pixel ratio.
- Load model.glb and crossfade between the Idle and Run clips with an AnimationMixer.
- Port the scene to React Three Fiber and dispose geometries and materials on unmount.

# Three.js Motion (3D / WebGL)

Build real-time 3D motion for the web: animated scenes, camera moves, GLTF playback, instancing, scroll-linked 3D, and React Three Fiber. Optimize for smooth 60fps and clean disposal.

## When to use

- 3D hero sections, product viewers, interactive/scroll-linked 3D backgrounds.
- Playing and blending GLTF animation clips.
- Rendering many objects efficiently (particle fields, tiles, forests).
- Camera fly-throughs and scroll-driven camera moves.

## Minimal scene + render loop

```js
import * as THREE from 'three';
const scene = new THREE.Scene();
const camera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera(50, innerWidth / innerHeight, 0.1, 100);
camera.position.set(0, 0, 5);
const renderer = new THREE.WebGLRenderer({ antialias: true });
renderer.setSize(innerWidth, innerHeight);
renderer.setPixelRatio(Math.min(devicePixelRatio, 2));   // cap DPR — critical for retina perf
document.body.appendChild(renderer.domElement);
const mesh = new THREE.Mesh(
  new THREE.IcosahedronGeometry(1, 0),
  new THREE.MeshStandardMaterial({ color: 0x44aaff, flatShading: true })
);
scene.add(mesh, new THREE.DirectionalLight(0xffffff, 2).translateZ(5),
          new THREE.AmbientLight(0xffffff, 0.4));
const clock = new THREE.Clock();
renderer.setAnimationLoop(() => {
  const dt = clock.getDelta();
  mesh.rotation.y += dt * 0.5;                            // frame-rate independent
  renderer.render(scene, camera);
});
addEventListener('resize', () => {
  camera.aspect = innerWidth / innerHeight;
  camera.updateProjectionMatrix();
  renderer.setSize(innerWidth, innerHeight);
});
```

Use `clock.getDelta()` to make motion frame-rate independent (multiply rates by `dt`), and `setAnimationLoop` (works with WebXR and pauses on tab blur) instead of raw `requestAnimationFrame`.

## GLTF animation clips

Load a model, play clips through an `AnimationMixer`, and **update the mixer with delta time** every frame.
