## What it does

This skill establishes an evidence-driven research workflow. When evaluating options, the agent checks primary sources directly: release notes, authoritative documentation, or version-pinned local code. Search snippets and summaries act only as leads. For complex tasks, the agent tracks findings in an evidence ledger with exact URLs or file lines.

Research mode stays read-only. The skill explicitly forbids implementing changes or mutating external state during an investigation. It also forbids uploading private repository code to third-party benchmark tools. When reviewing SOTA claims, the agent inspects the benchmark harness, task population, and compute budget rather than trusting headline scores.

Internal constraints always balance external findings. Even an attractive technical option gets rejected if it conflicts with the project's installed versions or deployment topology.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill research -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/research/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/research/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill research -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/research/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill research -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/research/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install hyperb1iss/hyperskills research
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/research/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill research -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/hyperb1iss/hyperskills --path skills/research
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/research/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill research -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/hyperb1iss/hyperskills/tree/HEAD/skills/research/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- compare competing libraries using verified operational limits
- audit benchmark methodologies behind SOTA model claims
- trace codebase architecture before proposing external tools
- maintain an evidence ledger with exact source locators

## Example prompts
- Investigate alternatives to our database client and compare failure modes.
- Evaluate SOTA options for local rerankers and check their benchmark harnesses.
- Deep dive into our routing package to see why the current version rejects wildcards.

# Evidence-Driven Research

Answer the actual question with traceable evidence and a recommendation when the question calls for one. Alternate investigation and provisional synthesis: use what you learn to choose the next useful check, while keeping conclusions revisable.

The user's instructions take precedence over this skill's guidelines. Research does not authorize implementation or external mutations. Respect a request to browse, to use specified sources, or to avoid browsing; explain any resulting evidence limit without inventing current facts.

## Frame the Decision

Identify the question, target system, relevant time or version, and consequence of being wrong. Confirm the named repository, product, or artifact exists before researching its properties. Recall prior decisions through the configured memory workflow; treat memory as a lead rather than current proof.

For an existing system, run an internal investigation alongside external research. Inspect the installed version, actual interface, deployment topology, or migration constraint. A technically attractive option can still fail the target system's requirements.

| Question shape                           | Useful approach                                                                      |
| ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| A current version or specific capability | Inspect the authoritative registry, release, docs, or local interface directly |
| A choice between technologies | Compare relevant capabilities, operating cost, failure modes, and adoption/exit cost |
| An uncertain performance claim | Examine methodology, then benchmark representative work if feasible |
| A broad landscape | Map distinct directions, then investigate the gaps that could alter the answer |
| A codebase question | Trace the implementation and consumers before searching externally |

Scale effort to unresolved uncertainty and decision impact. No minimum agent count, source count, wave count, or document size applies. A precise official answer may settle a narrow question; an important contradiction may deserve substantial investigation.

## Match the Evidence to the Claim

| Claim                      | Primary evidence                                                             |
| -------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
