# plan

Turns a messy feature into tasks with dependencies and exact checks before you touch code. Useful when the work outgrows one session.

## What it does

The skill fires when you ask for a plan, a breakdown, or the steps for a feature. It inspects repository status, relevant diffs, and the code path in question, then looks for an existing implementation pattern and the real verification commands in scripts, hooks, or CI. Work gets split into tasks with a contract: outcome, scope, dependencies, the exact runnable check, and completion evidence.

Planning depth follows uncertainty. A clear reversible change gets a brief inline plan, while an uncertain migration should resolve decisive unknowns and prove a vertical slice first. File count is a poor proxy for risk here — a one-line authorization change can need more analysis than a mechanical rename across many files.

An inherited plan is treated as a hypothesis. Consequential claims get rechecked against the current tree, and when a premise fails the skill updates the plan itself instead of leaving a detached comment that sends the executor down stale instructions. Project memory is read through the Sibyl skill, and delegation goes through `orchestrate`; both matter only if you have them configured.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill plan -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/plan/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/plan/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill plan -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/plan/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill plan -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/plan/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install hyperb1iss/hyperskills plan
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/plan/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill plan -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/hyperb1iss/hyperskills --path skills/plan
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/plan/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add hyperb1iss/hyperskills --skill plan -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/hyperb1iss/hyperskills/tree/HEAD/skills/plan/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a large feature into tasks with dependencies
- pin an exact verification command to each task
- separate verified facts from assumptions before editing
- pick a vertical slice for uncertain architecture
- keep the plan resumable for the next session

## Example prompts
- write a plan for this feature
- break this down into steps with checks
- plan the work for the schema migration

# Structured Planning

Build a plan that another session can execute and verify without rediscovering the decision. Specify outcomes and dependencies tightly enough to prevent drift while leaving implementation choices to the code and evidence encountered during execution.

The user's instructions take precedence over this skill's guidelines. Planning does not add an approval requirement. If execution is already authorized, continue after the plan is ready; if the user requested only a plan, deliver the plan without starting implementation.

## Size the Plan by Uncertainty

| Work shape                                      | Planning depth                                                       |
| ----------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Clear, reversible change with a direct check | Execute with a brief mental or inline plan |
| Several dependent behaviors with known patterns | Record tasks, interfaces, and acceptance checks |
| Uncertain architecture or migration | Resolve decisive unknowns and plan a representative vertical slice |
| Work spanning agents, sessions, or environments | Preserve ownership, state, dependencies, and resumption instructions |

File count is a poor proxy for risk. A one-line authorization change can need more analysis than a mechanical rename across many files. Plan enough to expose the uncertain or irreversible parts, not enough to predict every edit.

## Establish the Actual Starting Point

Inspect repository status, relevant diffs, and the code path under discussion. Locate an existing implementation pattern and the real verification commands in scripts, hooks, or CI. Read relevant project memory through the installed Sibyl skill when configured.

Record the facts that constrain execution:

- The observable user or system outcome.
- The current baseline and revision or environment being inspected.
- The interfaces, ownership, and compatibility obligations affected.
- The uncertainty that could invalidate the proposed work.
- The explicit constraints, non-goals, and user corrections.

Treat an inherited plan as a hypothesis. Recheck consequential claims against the current tree before executing them. Distinguish verified facts, assumptions awaiting a check, and obsolete premises. Update the plan itself when a premise fails; a detached comment leaves the executor following stale instructions.
