# hunt-a-handle

Sweeps a username across hundreds of platforms with sherlock, maigret and WhatsMyName, then helps you tell real accounts of one person from lookalikes.

## What it does

The skill runs the investigation in stages. First you write down scope, then pick an enumerator: `sherlock` for a fast broad sweep, `maigret` when you need profile content, since it returns fields like display name, bio, numeric ID and links. WhatsMyName is a detection list rather than a scanner, and reading its entries shows what the tool treated as proof.

Next comes variant generation: separator swaps, truncations, initials, number suffixes, character substitution. Hits feed back into the sweep. Confirmation is separate work — matching avatars, near-identical bio text, a profile linking the other profile, a shared contact. A matching handle is the thing under test, not evidence for it.

False positives are where this breaks. Soft 404s return 200 with a placeholder page, and CAPTCHA or rate-limit interstitials look like successful responses, so a single sweep is not trustworthy — rerun failures on their own. Collisions matter too: a short or dictionary-word handle across ten platforms is ten people more often than one. Logging in, messaging or requesting a follow is out of bounds by default, because that is interaction and it tells the subject you exist.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill hunt-a-handle -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hunt-a-handle/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hunt-a-handle/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill hunt-a-handle -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hunt-a-handle/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill hunt-a-handle -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hunt-a-handle/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install UseOSINT/Skills hunt-a-handle
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hunt-a-handle/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill hunt-a-handle -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/UseOSINT/Skills --path skills/hunt-a-handle
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hunt-a-handle/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add UseOSINT/Skills --skill hunt-a-handle -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- collect accounts behind one username
- filter out unrelated people with the same handle
- turn a handle into a real name
- check a marketplace seller for a synthetic identity
- audit how much of a person is exposed publicly

## Example prompts
- run hunt-a-handle on the username jdoe_92 and list the candidates
- generate variants of jdoe_92 and check them with maigret
- grade which of these profiles belong to the same person

# Hunt a handle

Handle reuse is the cheapest strong link in OSINT: one string, checked in
minutes, potentially tying a dozen platforms to one person. It is also the most
over-trusted. Enumerators do not verify identity — they perform HTTP existence
checks — and a hit list is a list of *candidates*, nothing more. The mistake
that ruins these investigations is pasting the tool's output into the report.
Enumeration is the cheap half; confirmation is the work.

## Step 1 — Authorized scope

Read [../../ETHICS.md](../../ETHICS.md) and write down, before any query:
subject, objective, in-bounds selectors, out-of-bounds actions (logging in,
contacting, requesting follows), and the governing jurisdiction. Handle hunting
drifts easily — one run hands you thirty new platforms, and it is trivial to end
up profiling an uninvolved person who shares the string.

**Done when** scope is written down and you can name what would put you out of
bounds.

## Step 2 — Pick your enumerator

| Holding | Reach for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One handle, need breadth fast | `sherlock` | Largest quick sweep, existence only |
| One handle, need profile content | `maigret` | Parses the page: display name, bio, IDs, links, sometimes country and creation date |
| Need to see why a hit fired | WhatsMyName data | Every check is a declared URI plus a match rule you can read |
| A handle on one known platform | Manual visit | Nothing beats reading the actual profile |

```bash
sherlock jdoe_92 --timeout 10 --csv
maigret jdoe_92 --html
```

maigret is the higher-value tool for correlation because it returns *fields*,
not booleans. A display name, avatar URL, self-declared location, numeric user
ID and an "also known as" list give you material to test the next platform
against. Sherlock gives you a URL and a claim.

WhatsMyName is a detection list, not a scanner: a JSON file of site entries,
each with a URI template and explicit match criteria (an expected HTTP status
