## What it does

Three training paths sit inside this skill: object detection with D-FINE, RT-DETR v2, DETR or YOLOS; image classification on timm backbones such as MobileNetV3, MobileViT, ResNet and ViT/DINOv3, or any Transformers classifier; and SAM/SAM2 segmentation or image matting driven by bbox and point prompts. The work is done by helper scripts — `scripts/object_detection_training.py`, `scripts/image_classification_training.py`, `scripts/sam_segmentation_training.py`, `scripts/dataset_inspector.py` and `scripts/estimate_cost.py` — run through `uv run` with PEP 723 inline dependencies.

Before any GPU job, the skill pushes you to inspect the dataset. The inspector reports `✓ READY` or `✗ NEEDS FORMATTING` and prints mapping code for the second case. Detection data needs an `objects` column holding `bbox` and `category`, in xywh or xyxy — the format is detected and converted for you. Classification needs `image` and `label`. SAM work needs `image`, `mask` and a prompt. The detection script also sanitises boxes, creates `image_id` when it is missing and turns string categories into integers.

Jobs run only on a paid Hugging Face plan: Pro, Team or Enterprise. The token must have write access and has to travel in the job secrets. The 30-minute default timeout is too short for training, so set it above your expected run time. Persistence is switched on with `push_to_hub=True` and `hub_model_id`.

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add huggingface/skills --skill huggingface-vision-trainer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/huggingface-vision-trainer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/huggingface-vision-trainer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add huggingface/skills --skill huggingface-vision-trainer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/huggingface-vision-trainer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add huggingface/skills --skill huggingface-vision-trainer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/huggingface-vision-trainer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install huggingface/skills huggingface-vision-trainer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/huggingface-vision-trainer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add huggingface/skills --skill huggingface-vision-trainer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/huggingface/skills --path skills/huggingface-vision-trainer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/huggingface-vision-trainer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add huggingface/skills --skill huggingface-vision-trainer -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- fine-tune an object detector on a custom dataset without a local GPU
- train an image classifier on a timm backbone
- fine-tune SAM2 for image matting with bbox prompts
- check a dataset's format before spending GPU time
- estimate job cost and pick a hardware flavour

## Example prompts
- Inspect `username/my-dataset` with the dataset inspector and tell me if it's ready
- Fine-tune D-FINE on my detection dataset and push the model to the Hub
- Train a MobileNetV3 classifier on a dataset with `image` and `label` columns

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when users want to:
- Fine-tune object detection models (D-FINE, RT-DETR v2, DETR, YOLOS) on cloud GPUs or local
- Fine-tune image classification models (timm: MobileNetV3, MobileViT, ResNet, ViT/DINOv3, or any Transformers classifier) on cloud GPUs or local
- Fine-tune SAM or SAM2 models for segmentation / image matting using bbox or point prompts
- Train bounding-box detectors on custom datasets
- Train image classifiers on custom datasets
