## What it does

The skill details how to configure fast tokenization backed by a Rust core. It processes 1GB of text in under 20 seconds on CPU. That is 10 to 100 times faster than pure Python code. Supported algorithms include BPE, WordPiece, and Unigram.

It outlines full pipeline construction: normalization, pre-tokenization, model training, and batch encoding with padding. Running these workflows requires Python dependencies `tokenizers`, `transformers`, and `datasets`.

If you only load pretrained weights, standard `AutoTokenizer` is usually enough. This skill focuses on building vocabularies from scratch and processing large datasets where raw throughput matters.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill huggingface-tokenizers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/huggingface-tokenizers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/huggingface-tokenizers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill huggingface-tokenizers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/huggingface-tokenizers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill huggingface-tokenizers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/huggingface-tokenizers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs huggingface-tokenizers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/huggingface-tokenizers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill huggingface-tokenizers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 02-tokenization/huggingface-tokenizers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/huggingface-tokenizers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill huggingface-tokenizers -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- train custom BPE or WordPiece tokenizers from raw text files
- tokenize gigabyte-scale datasets on CPU in under 20 seconds per gigabyte
- configure text normalization pipelines using lowercase and accent stripping
- run batch text encoding with custom padding tokens

## Example prompts
- Show me how to train a custom BPE tokenizer on text files with a 30000 vocab size
- Configure a text normalization sequence with NFD and StripAccents using tokenizers
- Write a script for batch text encoding with padding in Python

# HuggingFace Tokenizers - Fast Tokenization for NLP

Fast, production-ready tokenizers with Rust performance and Python ease-of-use.

## When to use HuggingFace Tokenizers

**Use HuggingFace Tokenizers when:**
- Need extremely fast tokenization (<20s per GB of text)
- Training custom tokenizers from scratch
- Want alignment tracking (token → original text position)
- Building production NLP pipelines
- Need to tokenize large corpora efficiently

**Performance**:
- **Speed**: <20 seconds to tokenize 1GB on CPU
- **Implementation**: Rust core with Python/Node.js bindings
- **Efficiency**: 10-100× faster than pure Python implementations

**Use alternatives instead**:
- **SentencePiece**: Language-independent, used by T5/ALBERT
- **tiktoken**: OpenAI's BPE tokenizer for GPT models
- **transformers AutoTokenizer**: Loading pretrained only (uses this library internally)

## Quick start

### Installation

```bash
# Install tokenizers
pip install tokenizers
# With transformers integration
pip install tokenizers transformers
```

### Load pretrained tokenizer

```python
from tokenizers import Tokenizer
# Load from HuggingFace Hub
tokenizer = Tokenizer.from_pretrained("bert-base-uncased")
# Encode text
output = tokenizer.encode("Hello, how are you?")
print(output.tokens)  # ['hello', ',', 'how', 'are', 'you', '?']
print(output.ids)     # [7592, 1010, 2129, 2024, 2017, 1029]
# Decode back
text = tokenizer.decode(output.ids)
print(text)  # "hello, how are you?"
```

### Train custom BPE tokenizer

```python
from tokenizers import Tokenizer
from tokenizers.models import BPE
from tokenizers.trainers import BpeTrainer
from tokenizers.pre_tokenizers import Whitespace
# Initialize tokenizer with BPE model
tokenizer = Tokenizer(BPE(unk_token="[UNK]"))
tokenizer.pre_tokenizer = Whitespace()
# Configure trainer
trainer = BpeTrainer(
    vocab_size=30000,
    special_tokens=["[UNK]", "[CLS]", "[SEP]", "[PAD]", "[MASK]"],
    min_frequency=2
)
# Train on files
files = ["train.txt", "validation.txt"]
tokenizer.train(files, trainer)
# Save
