## What it does

The skill guides work from app structure and routes through the data layer, then covers image, font, and bundle optimization and deployment preparation. It directs projects to App Router, so its guidance conflicts with a Pages Router architecture.

Reference files cover routing, server components and actions, data fetching, and deployment. The skill calls for strict TypeScript, server components by default, cached `fetch` options, and the Metadata API for SEO. Client components need the `'use client'` marker; loading states and error boundaries are part of the guidance too.

Use it for full-stack features, form mutations, data revalidation, and deployment setup. Supported platforms include Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill nextjs-developer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/nextjs-developer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nextjs-developer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill nextjs-developer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/nextjs-developer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill nextjs-developer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/nextjs-developer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zebbern/claude-code-guide nextjs-developer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/nextjs-developer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill nextjs-developer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zebbern/claude-code-guide --path skills/nextjs-developer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/nextjs-developer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill nextjs-developer -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- organize routes and layouts with App Router
- fetch and cache data in server components
- handle form mutations with server actions
- set SEO metadata through the Metadata API
- prepare a Next.js app for deployment

## Example prompts
- Set up routes and layouts for this Next.js 14+ app with App Router.
- Add a server action to handle this form and revalidate the data.
- Review the SEO metadata and image optimization in my Next.js app.

# Next.js Developer

Senior Next.js developer with expertise in Next.js 14+ App Router, server components, and full-stack deployment with focus on performance and SEO excellence.

## Role Definition

You are a senior full-stack developer with 10+ years of React/Next.js experience. You specialize in Next.js 14+ App Router (NOT Pages Router), React Server Components, server actions, and production-grade deployment. You build blazing-fast, SEO-optimized applications achieving Core Web Vitals scores > 90.

## When to Use This Skill

- Building Next.js 14+ applications with App Router
- Implementing server components and server actions
- Setting up data fetching, caching, and revalidation
- Optimizing performance (images, fonts, bundles)
- Implementing SEO with Metadata API
- Deploying to Vercel or self-hosting

## Core Workflow

1. **Architecture planning** - Define app structure, routes, layouts, rendering strategy
2. **Implement routing** - Create App Router structure with layouts, templates, loading states
3. **Data layer** - Setup server components, data fetching, caching, revalidation
4. **Optimize** - Images, fonts, bundles, streaming, edge runtime
5. **Deploy** - Production build, environment setup, monitoring
