## What it does

The bundled `scripts/http_benchmark.py` script relies solely on the Python standard library. It gradually steps through concurrency tiers (1, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500 by default) while tracking throughput, error counts, and latency distribution percentiles.

The tool flags four distinct bottleneck signals: accelerating p99 latency, per-connection RPS drops exceeding 40%, throughput plateaus accompanied by latency spikes, and error rates passing 1%. The suggested optimal load is the concurrency step immediately preceding the first detected inflection point.

Either `wrk` or `ab` must be present on the host system before running benchmarks. The script prefers `wrk` because its HdrHistogram implementation yields more accurate percentile metrics.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill http-load-profiler -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/http-load-profiler/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/http-load-profiler/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill http-load-profiler -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/http-load-profiler/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill http-load-profiler -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/http-load-profiler/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install zebbern/claude-code-guide http-load-profiler
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/http-load-profiler/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill http-load-profiler -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/zebbern/claude-code-guide --path skills/http-load-profiler
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/http-load-profiler/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add zebbern/claude-code-guide --skill http-load-profiler -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- benchmark API latency percentiles under stepped concurrency
- detect throughput saturation points before system crashes
- recommend optimal concurrency settings for an HTTP service
- spot error rate surges during traffic spikes

## Example prompts
- Run a stepped load test against https://example.com/api/health using wrk
- Benchmark https://example.com/ with steps 5, 20, 50 and output JSON
- Find the saturation point and optimal concurrency for https://example.com/api/health

# HTTP Load Profiler — Stepped Concurrency Load Test + Inflection Point Analysis

Run stepped concurrency load tests against HTTP services, automatically collect latency percentiles, and detect performance inflection points.

## Features

- **Dual engine support**: Auto-detects wrk (preferred) or ab (Apache Bench); manual override available
- **Stepped concurrency**: Ramps up through user-defined concurrency levels (default: 1 → 10 → 50 → 100 → 200 → 500)
- **Latency percentiles**: Collects p50 / p90 / p99 latency at each level
- **Inflection point detection**: Automatically identifies four types of performance inflection points
  - p99 latency accelerating (increase exceeds 2x the previous step's increase)
  - Throughput efficiency dropping significantly (RPS per connection drops > 40%)
  - Throughput saturated while latency spikes (RPS growth < 10%, p99 growth > 50%)
  - Error rate surging (exceeds 1% and doubles from previous step)
- **Optimal concurrency recommendation**: Automatically suggests the best concurrency level based on inflection points
- **Zero Python dependencies**: Pure standard library implementation

## Quick Start

```bash
# Basic usage — run default stepped load test against target URL
python3 scripts/http_benchmark.py https://example.com/api/health
# Custom concurrency steps and duration per step
python3 scripts/http_benchmark.py https://example.com/api/health -s 5,20,50,100,300 -d 15
# Specify ab as the engine
python3 scripts/http_benchmark.py https://example.com/ -t ab
# JSON-only output (for programmatic parsing)
python3 scripts/http_benchmark.py https://example.com/api/health --json
# Use ab with a specific number of requests per step
python3 scripts/http_benchmark.py https://example.com/ -t ab -n 5000
# Save JSON report to a file
python3 scripts/http_benchmark.py https://example.com/api/health --json > report.json
```

## Parameters

| Parameter | Short | Default | Description |
|-----------|-------|---------|-------------|
| `url` | — | (required) | Target URL (http:// or https://) |
| `--steps` | `-s` | `1,10,50,100,200,500` | Concurrency steps (comma-separated positive integers) |
| `--duration` | `-d` | `10` | Duration per step in seconds (used directly by wrk; ab estimates request count from this) |
| `--requests` | `-n` | `concurrency×100` | Total requests per step when using ab |
| `--tool` | `-t` | auto-detect | Specify load testing tool: `wrk` or `ab` |
