# hook-developer

A reference for Claude hooks: input and output schemas, registration in settings.json, testing patterns. Handy when you are writing a hook and forgot the exact format.

## What it does

The skill opens with a table of every hook event: PreToolUse, PostToolUse, UserPromptSubmit, PermissionRequest, SessionStart, SessionEnd, Stop, SubagentStart, SubagentStop, PreCompact, Notification. Each row says when it fires, whether it can block, and what it is for. Hook type is either `type: "command"` for bash or `type: "prompt"` for LLM evaluation.

Then come the JSON schemas per event. PreToolUse returns `permissionDecision` set to `allow`, `deny` or `ask`, and exit code 2 blocks the tool while stderr goes to the model. In PostToolUse the response field is `tool_response`, not `tool_result` — an easy slip that costs debugging time.

A few details break hooks more often than anything else. Stop and SubagentStop need a check on `stop_hook_active: true`, otherwise you get an infinite loop. SessionStart exposes `CLAUDE_ENV_FILE`, where you write `export VAR=value` to persist environment variables. SessionEnd cannot change the session, so keep it for cleanup and logging.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill hook-developer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hook-developer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hook-developer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill hook-developer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hook-developer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill hook-developer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hook-developer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 hook-developer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hook-developer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill hook-developer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --path .claude/skills/hook-developer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hook-developer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill hook-developer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/hook-developer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a hook with the correct input and output schema
- block a dangerous tool call before it runs
- register a hook in settings.json without errors
- debug a hook that never receives the expected fields
- avoid an infinite loop on Stop and SubagentStop

## Example prompts
- Write a PreToolUse hook that blocks rm -rf
- What output format does PostToolUse use to send context back?
- Check my Stop hook for an infinite loop

# Hook Developer

Complete reference for developing Claude Code hooks. Use this to write hooks with correct input/output schemas.

## When to Use

- Creating a new hook
- Debugging hook input/output format
- Understanding what fields are available
- Setting up hook registration in settings.json
- Learning what hooks can block vs inject context

## Quick Reference

| Hook | Fires When | Can Block? | Primary Use |
|------|-----------|------------|-------------|
| **PreToolUse** | Before tool executes | YES | Block/modify tool calls |
| **PostToolUse** | After tool completes | Partial | React to tool results |
| **UserPromptSubmit** | User sends prompt | YES | Validate/inject context |
| **PermissionRequest** | Permission dialog shows | YES | Auto-approve/deny |
| **SessionStart** | Session begins | NO | Load context, set env vars |
| **SessionEnd** | Session ends | NO | Cleanup/save state |
| **Stop** | Agent finishes | YES | Force continuation |
| **SubagentStart** | Subagent spawns | NO | Pattern coordination |
| **SubagentStop** | Subagent finishes | YES | Force continuation |
| **PreCompact** | Before compaction | NO | Save state |
| **Notification** | Notification sent | NO | Custom alerts |

**Hook type options:** `type: "command"` (bash) or `type: "prompt"` (LLM evaluation)

## Hook Input/Output Schemas

### PreToolUse

**Purpose:** Block or modify tool execution before it happens.

**Input:**
```json
{
  "session_id": "string",
  "transcript_path": "string",
  "cwd": "string",
  "permission_mode": "default|plan|acceptEdits|bypassPermissions",
  "hook_event_name": "PreToolUse",
  "tool_name": "string",
  "tool_input": {
    "file_path": "string",
    "command": "string"
  },
  "tool_use_id": "string"
}
```

**Output (JSON):**
```json
{
  "hookSpecificOutput": {
    "hookEventName": "PreToolUse",
    "permissionDecision": "allow|deny|ask",
    "permissionDecisionReason": "string",
    "updatedInput": {}
  },
  "continue": true,
  "stopReason": "string",
  "systemMessage": "string",
  "suppressOutput": true
}
```

**Exit code 2:** Blocks tool, stderr shown to Claude.

**Common matchers:** `Bash`, `Edit|Write`, `Read`, `Task`, `mcp__.*`

---

### PostToolUse

**Purpose:** React to tool execution results, provide feedback to Claude.

**Input:**
```json
{
  "session_id": "string",
  "transcript_path": "string",
  "cwd": "string",
  "permission_mode": "string",
  "hook_event_name": "PostToolUse",
  "tool_name": "string",
  "tool_input": {},
  "tool_response": {
    "filePath": "string",
    "success": true,
    "output": "string",
