# hono

A skill that feeds the agent Hono API knowledge and makes it verify apps through Hono CLI instead of throwaway scripts.

## What it does

The skill puts a Hono reference straight into the agent's context: the app constructor, routing methods, path parameters and regex constraints, route grouping, error handling, context methods like `c.json` and `c.redirect`, headers and request-scoped variables. When code imports from `hono` or `hono/*`, the agent picks this up on its own.

Verification runs through Hono CLI, not throwaway scripts or a dev server. Install it as a dev dependency with `npm install -D @hono/cli@next`, then read `npx hono --help`. `npx hono routes` lists the routes, `npx hono request /path` sends one request with no server running. If the app is not at `src/index.ts`, pass the file to every command: `npx hono request / src/app.ts`. Do not put credentials in CLI arguments — use environment variables for sensitive values.

For a stateful flow there is `npx hono batch -`: one JSON object per line, and a saved value can be reused as `{{id}}` in a later step. Before touching existing routes, capture current behavior with `npx hono snapshot`, then rerun those lines through `batch` until `"failed": 0`. On a large API, `--status-only` and `--compact` keep the output small. The skill assumes Hono CLI is available; projects from `create-hono` already ship it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honojs/skills --skill hono -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hono/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honojs/skills --skill hono -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honojs/skills --skill hono -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install honojs/skills hono
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hono/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honojs/skills --skill hono -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/honojs/skills --path skills/hono
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add honojs/skills --skill hono -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/honojs/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/hono/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- learn Hono routing without digging through the docs
- test a route with a single request and no server
- capture current API behavior before a refactor
- run a POST-then-GET flow that reuses the returned id
- shrink check output on a large API

## Example prompts
- list every route in the app with hono routes
- send a POST to /users and check it returns 201
- snapshot the current routes, then change the handler

# Hono Skill

Build Hono web applications. This skill provides inline API knowledge for AI. Use Hono CLI to inspect and test the app.

## Latest Documentation

For details beyond this inline reference, fetch the latest documentation from https://hono.dev. Get the index of doc pages from `https://hono.dev/llms.txt`, then fetch a page with the `Accept: text/markdown` header to receive it as Markdown:

```bash
curl -H "Accept: text/markdown" https://hono.dev/docs/helpers/cookie
```

## Hono CLI

Verify with [Hono CLI](https://github.com/honojs/cli), not with throwaway scripts or a dev server. It is a dev dependency (projects from `create-hono` already have it), loads the app in-process with `app.request()`, and prints JSON. Install it if missing, then read its help:

<!-- TODO at the 1.0 release: change @hono/cli@next to @hono/cli -->

```bash
npm install -D @hono/cli@next
npx hono --help
```

Follow the note at the top. It explains the JSON output contract and the workflow. `npx hono <command> --help` has examples and notes for each command (`routes`, `request`, `batch`, `snapshot`, `benchmark`, `ssg`, `init`).

<!-- TODO at the Hono v5 GA: change `npm create hono@next` to `npm create hono@latest` here and in hono-jsx -->

Notes:

- `npx hono routes` lists the routes; `npx hono request /path` sends one request — no server needed. If the app is not at the default path (`src/index.ts`), pass the file to every command: `npx hono request / src/app.ts`. Do not pass credentials directly in CLI arguments; use environment variables for sensitive values.
- Cloudflare bindings (KV, D1, R2, vars) reach `c.env` automatically — no server, no flag. In a project with `cloudflare.config.ts` (the `cf` CLI) and a Vite config, `request`, `batch`, and `snapshot` run through the Vite dev server by default, and `c.env` has the local bindings; `request` and `batch` default to Vite as well in a Vite project with no `src/index.*` (an app built by a Vite plugin; `snapshot` still needs the file), and `--runtime vite` selects it explicitly. In a project with a wrangler config, the app runs on Node.js with the real local bindings loaded; for the full Workers runtime there, add `--runtime workerd` (pass no file argument; the entry is `main` in the wrangler config). `--trace`, `--watch`, and a file argument run the app on Node.js, where `c.env` is empty in a `cf` project.
- `routes` and `snapshot` also load apps that import `cloudflare:workers` (Durable Objects); the import is stubbed while the routes are read.
