## What it does

The skill walks through building a Hono server, from defining endpoints to reading request parameters and returning JSON or other responses. It covers middleware for CORS and authentication, request validation with Zod, and splitting an app into route groups.

For RPC, the examples show how to expose route types and consume them through `hc`. The documented runtime options include Cloudflare Workers, Deno, Bun, Node.js, and WinterCG-compatible environments. Since deployment targets differ, check the runtime before carrying project settings across environments.

To add the skill with the Claude Code templates package, run `npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill web-development/hono`. The entry also provides an alternative using `npx skills` and a skill file path.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **claude-code-templates**
```bash
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill web-development/hono
```

2. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add davila7/claude-code-templates --skill hono -a claude-code
```

3. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hono/

### Codex

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install davila7/claude-code-templates hono
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hono/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

**Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates --path cli-tool/components/skills/web-development/hono
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hono/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/davila7/claude-code-templates/tree/HEAD/cli-tool/components/skills/web-development/hono

## When to use it
- define REST API routes and handle request parameters
- add CORS or bearer authentication middleware
- validate JSON input with Zod
- organize an app into route groups
- connect a typed RPC client to an API

## Example prompts
- Build a Hono REST API with routes for posts and users.
- Add CORS and bearer authentication middleware to this API.
- Set up an `hc` client using the Hono route types.
