# hono-validation

A skill for validating Hono requests: JSON bodies, forms, query params, headers and cookies. Useful when you want schema types inside the handler.

## What it does

The skill walks through wiring validation into Hono as middleware. It ships patterns for Zod, TypeBox and Valibot, plus the built-in lightweight validator from `hono/validator` if you'd rather skip extra dependencies. You define the schema once and read typed data in the handler with `c.req.valid('json')`.

Every validation target is covered: JSON bodies, form data, query params, path params, headers and cookies. Query and form values arrive as strings, so there is a dedicated section on `z.coerce`. The skill also covers transforms, refinements, discriminated unions, and returning your own error response from the `zValidator` callback.

Zod needs two packages: `@hono/zod-validator` and `zod`. TypeBox and Valibot each have their own pair, and Standard Schema uses `@hono/standard-validator`. One gotcha worth knowing before you write a header schema: Zod expects header names in lowercase, otherwise validation silently misses. The skill is marked `user-invocable: false`, so the agent picks it up on its own rather than through a slash command.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-validation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hono-validation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hono-validation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-validation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hono-validation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-validation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hono-validation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills hono-validation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hono-validation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-validation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/javascript/frameworks/hono/hono-validation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hono-validation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-validation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/javascript/frameworks/hono/hono-validation/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check a JSON body before the handler runs
- coerce query strings into numbers with defaults
- validate an authorization header with a Bearer prefix
- parse a path param as a UUID
- return custom JSON error details instead of the default response

## Example prompts
- add zValidator JSON body validation to this Hono route
- write a query schema with coerce for page and limit
- set up a custom validation error response using result.error.flatten()

# Hono Validation Patterns

## Overview

Hono provides a lightweight built-in validator and integrates seamlessly with popular validation libraries like Zod, TypeBox, and Valibot. Validation happens as middleware, providing type-safe access to validated data in handlers.

**Key Features**:
- Built-in lightweight validator
- First-class Zod integration via `@hono/zod-validator`
- Standard Schema support (works with any validation library)
- Type inference from validation schemas
- Validates: JSON, forms, query params, headers, cookies, path params

## When to Use This Skill

Use Hono validation when:
- Validating API request bodies (JSON, form data)
- Ensuring query parameters meet requirements
- Validating authentication headers
- Type-safe path parameter parsing
- Cookie validation

## Installation

```bash
# Zod (recommended)
npm install @hono/zod-validator zod
# TypeBox
npm install @hono/typebox-validator @sinclair/typebox
# Valibot
npm install @hono/valibot-validator valibot
# Standard Schema (any compatible library)
npm install @hono/standard-validator
```

## Zod Validation (Recommended)

### Basic Usage

```typescript
import { Hono } from 'hono'
import { zValidator } from '@hono/zod-validator'
import { z } from 'zod'
const app = new Hono()
// Define schema
const createUserSchema = z.object({
  name: z.string().min(1).max(100),
  email: z.string().email(),
  age: z.number().int().min(0).max(150).optional()
})
// Apply validation
app.post(
  '/users',
  zValidator('json', createUserSchema),
  (c) => {
    // Fully typed! { name: string; email: string; age?: number }
    const data = c.req.valid('json')
    return c.json({ user: data }, 201)
  }
)
```

### Validation Targets

```typescript
// JSON body
app.post('/api', zValidator('json', schema), handler)
// Form data (multipart or urlencoded)
````
