# hono-testing

A skill that shows how to test Hono apps: build a Request, hand it to the app, check the Response. Covers the typed test client and Workers bindings too.

## What it does

The skill collects testing patterns for Hono. The core loop is short: construct a request, pass it into your app, assert on the response. Examples cover GET with query strings, POST with a JSON body and with `FormData`, requests carrying an `Authorization` header, and DELETE by id.

A second part walks through the typed test client from `hono/testing`. Because types are inferred from your routes, calls like `client.users.$post({ json: ... })` surface the expected body and params. There are also cases for `@hono/zod-validator` with `zod`, where valid input returns 201 and a bad email or a missing name returns 400.

For Cloudflare Workers the skill shows how to fake bindings: a D1 mock with `all`, `first` and `run`, a KV mock, and a test `API_KEY`, all passed as the third argument to `app.request()`. Vitest appears in the samples, though nothing ties the approach to it — Jest works the same way.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hono-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hono-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hono-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hono-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills hono-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hono-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/javascript/frameworks/hono/hono-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hono-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- write unit tests for Hono route handlers
- assert on status, headers and body of an API response
- test middleware and the full request-response cycle
- stub Cloudflare Workers bindings inside tests
- confirm a validation schema rejects bad input

## Example prompts
- Write tests for the `/users` route using `app.request()` and check status and JSON
- Set up `testClient(app)` and test user creation
- Mock the D1 and KV bindings for a worker test

# Hono Testing Patterns

## Overview

Hono provides a simple testing approach: create a Request, pass it to your app, and validate the Response. The framework includes a typed test client for even better DX.

**Key Features**:
- Simple `app.request()` API
- Typed test client with full inference
- Environment mocking for Workers
- Works with Vitest, Jest, or any test runner

## When to Use This Skill

Use Hono testing when:
- Writing unit tests for route handlers
- Integration testing API endpoints
- Testing middleware behavior
- Mocking Cloudflare Workers bindings
- Validating request/response cycles

## Basic Testing

### Using app.request()

```typescript
import { Hono } from 'hono'
import { describe, it, expect } from 'vitest'
const app = new Hono()
app.get('/hello', (c) => c.text('Hello!'))
app.get('/json', (c) => c.json({ message: 'Hello' }))
describe('Basic routes', () => {
  it('should return text', async () => {
    const res = await app.request('/hello')
    expect(res.status).toBe(200)
    expect(await res.text()).toBe('Hello!')
  })
  it('should return JSON', async () => {
    const res = await app.request('/json')
    expect(res.status).toBe(200)
    expect(res.headers.get('Content-Type')).toContain('application/json')
    expect(await res.json()).toEqual({ message: 'Hello' })
  })
})
```

### Request Options

```typescript
// GET with query params
const res = await app.request('/search?q=hono&page=1')
// POST with JSON body
const res = await app.request('/users', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
    'Content-Type': 'application/json'
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({ name: 'Alice', email: 'alice@example.com' })
})
// POST with form data
const formData = new FormData()
formData.append('name', 'Alice')
formData.append('email', 'alice@example.com')
const res = await app.request('/users', {
  method: 'POST',
  body: formData
})
// With custom headers
const res = await app.request('/protected', {
  headers: {
    'Authorization': 'Bearer token123',
    'X-Custom-Header': 'value'
  }
})
// DELETE request
const res = await app.request('/users/123', {
