A skill that walks through Hono RPC: export AppType on the server, call hc<AppType> on the client, skip codegen entirely.

## What it does

The skill covers the Hono RPC pattern end to end. Server routes are declared as one chained expression, the resulting type is exported as `AppType`, and `hc<AppType>` on the client turns that type into methods that already know their paths, request shapes and response types. No code generation step sits in between.

Examples inside cover Zod validation with `zValidator`, path params like `client.posts[':postId'].comments[':commentId'].$get`, query strings, JSON bodies, form data and headers. A separate section handles `InferResponseType` and `InferRequestType`, since response types depend on the status code and the `200` and `404` branches are read separately.

One trap is worth knowing before you start: routes have to be chained. Write `app.get(...)` and `app.post(...)` as separate statements and the types drop out, so `AppType` ends up missing routes. The skill is marked as not user-invocable, so it loads on its own when the agent touches Hono code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-rpc -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hono-rpc/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hono-rpc/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-rpc -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hono-rpc/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-rpc -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hono-rpc/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills hono-rpc
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hono-rpc/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-rpc -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/javascript/frameworks/hono/hono-rpc
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hono-rpc/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-rpc -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- get a typed API client without OpenAPI or codegen
- catch bad API calls at compile time instead of runtime
- share types between server and client in a monorepo
- branch on status codes with the right response type per branch
- wire Zod validation into query, json, form and header

## Example prompts
- Chain the Hono routes and export AppType so the client can infer them
- Set up a typed client with hc<AppType> and show a call with a path param
- How do I get the request body type for a form with InferRequestType?

# Hono RPC - Type-Safe Client

## Overview

Hono RPC enables sharing API specifications between server and client through TypeScript's type system. Export your server's type, and the client automatically knows all routes, request shapes, and response types - no code generation required.

**Key Features**:
- Zero-codegen type-safe client
- Automatic TypeScript inference
- Works with Zod validators
- Status code-aware response types
- Supports path params, query, headers

## When to Use This Skill

Use Hono RPC when:
- Building full-stack TypeScript applications
- Need type-safe API consumption without OpenAPI/codegen
- Want compile-time validation of API calls
- Sharing types between client and server in monorepos

## Basic Setup

### Server Side

```typescript
// server/index.ts
import { Hono } from 'hono'
import { zValidator } from '@hono/zod-validator'
import { z } from 'zod'
const app = new Hono()
// Define routes with validation
const route = app
  .get('/users', async (c) => {
    const users = [{ id: '1', name: 'Alice' }]
    return c.json({ users })
  })
  .post(
    '/users',
    zValidator('json', z.object({
      name: z.string(),
      email: z.string().email()
    })),
    async (c) => {
      const data = c.req.valid('json')
      return c.json({ id: '1', ...data }, 201)
    }
  )
  .get('/users/:id', async (c) => {
    const id = c.req.param('id')
    return c.json({ id, name: 'Alice' })
  })
// Export type for client
export type AppType = typeof route
export default app
```

### Client Side

```typescript
// client/api.ts
import { hc } from 'hono/client'
import type { AppType } from '../server'
// Create typed client
const client = hc<AppType>('http://localhost:3000')
// All methods are type-safe!
async function examples() {
  // GET /users
  const usersRes = await client.users.$get()
  const { users } = await usersRes.json()
  // users: { id: string; name: string }[]
  // POST /users - body is typed
  const createRes = await client.users.$post({
    json: {
      name: 'Bob',
      email: 'bob@example.com'
    }
