## What it does

The skill walks through Hono's built-in JSX renderer for producing HTML on the server. It covers component patterns, components that await data, streaming through `Suspense`, error boundaries, and the Context API. Nothing hydrates on the client — the browser gets finished markup.

Setup lives in `tsconfig.json`: set `"jsx": "react-jsx"` and point `"jsxImportSource"` at `hono/jsx`. Deno projects use `npm:hono/jsx` instead. Pragma comments at the top of a file work as an alternative. Responses go out through `c.html()`, and streaming uses `renderToReadableStream` from `hono/jsx/streaming`.

Interactive SPAs are out of scope; the skill points to React, Vue or Svelte for those. If your app keeps state on the client, this one won't help.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-jsx -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hono-jsx/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hono-jsx/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-jsx -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hono-jsx/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-jsx -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hono-jsx/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills hono-jsx
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hono-jsx/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-jsx -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/javascript/frameworks/hono/hono-jsx
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hono-jsx/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill hono-jsx -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/javascript/frameworks/hono/hono-jsx/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- serve finished HTML without client-side hydration
- compose a page from async components backed by database calls
- stream a long response and show a placeholder while it loads
- catch a component error and render a fallback instead
- share one layout with header and footer across pages

## Example prompts
- Set up `tsconfig.json` for Hono JSX and write a `Layout` component that takes a title and children
- Wrap the slow component in `Suspense` with a fallback and return the page via `renderToReadableStream`
- Add an `ErrorBoundary` around the component that fetches data and may throw

# Hono JSX - Server-Side Rendering

## Overview

Hono provides a built-in JSX renderer for server-side HTML generation. It supports async components, streaming with Suspense, and integrates seamlessly with Hono's response system.

**Key Features**:
- Server-side JSX rendering
- Async component support
- Streaming with Suspense
- Automatic head hoisting
- Error boundaries
- Context API
- Zero client-side hydration overhead

## When to Use This Skill

Use Hono JSX when:
- Building server-rendered HTML pages
- Creating email templates
- Generating static HTML
- Streaming large HTML responses
- Building MPA (Multi-Page Applications)

**Not for**: Interactive SPAs (use React/Vue/Svelte instead)

## Configuration

### TypeScript Configuration

```json
// tsconfig.json
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "jsx": "react-jsx",
    "jsxImportSource": "hono/jsx"
  }
}
```

### Alternative: Pragma Comments

```tsx
/** @jsx jsx */
/** @jsxImportSource hono/jsx */
```

### Deno Configuration

```json
// deno.json
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "jsx": "react-jsx",
    "jsxImportSource": "npm:hono/jsx"
  }
}
```

## Basic Usage

### Simple Rendering

```tsx
import { Hono } from 'hono'
const app = new Hono()
app.get('/', (c) => {
  return c.html(
    <html>
      <head>
        <title>Hello Hono</title>
      </head>
      <body>
        <h1>Hello, World!</h1>
      </body>
    </html>
  )
})
```

### Components

```tsx
import { Hono } from 'hono'
import type { FC } from 'hono/jsx'
// Define props type
type GreetingProps = {
  name: string
  age?: number
}
// Functional component
const Greeting: FC<GreetingProps> = ({ name, age }) => {
  return (
    <div>
      <h1>Hello, {name}!</h1>
      {age && <p>You are {age} years old.</p>}
    </div>
  )
}
const app = new Hono()
app.get('/hello/:name', (c) => {
  const name = c.req.param('name')
  return c.html(<Greeting name={name} />)
})
```

### Layout Components

```tsx
import type { FC, PropsWithChildren } from 'hono/jsx'
const Layout: FC<PropsWithChildren<{ title: string }>> = ({ title, children }) => {
  return (
    <html>
      <head>
        <meta charset="UTF-8" />
