## What it does

The skill starts by pinning down the target: a specific 5.x release or source branch, C++ or Python, individual modules, SDK development. It then reads the release notes and the install guide for that version. One catch worth knowing — an unversioned docs page may still describe 4.x, so the version has to be fixed explicitly.

Host checks are read-only: `uname -m`, `/etc/os-release`, `nvidia-smi`, Python and glibc versions, Docker. It also looks at what is already installed, using `python -m pip list` in the target environment and `dpkg-query -W 'holoscan*'` on Debian, which is how a 4.x install gets told apart from a usable 5.x one. For an image you already pulled there is `scripts/check_ngc_image.sh` with the full 5.x tag; it inspects the local image only and makes no registry request.

The 5.0 baseline is CUDA 13, Ubuntu 24.04, x86_64 and SBSA arm64, with wheels needing glibc 2.39 and CPython 3.12–3.14. The CUDA value in `nvidia-smi` describes driver capability, not toolkit presence. A CUDA 12-only host cannot be routed to a 5.x CUDA 12 package, because no such package exists. ARM64 alone does not mean Tegra or iGPU support — on Jetson, IGX, DGX Spark or Grace that needs confirming before you install. Conda is unavailable for 5.0, and the 4.x Conda package does not satisfy a 5.x request.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill holoscan-setup -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/holoscan-setup/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/holoscan-setup/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill holoscan-setup -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/holoscan-setup/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill holoscan-setup -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/holoscan-setup/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install NVIDIA/skills holoscan-setup
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/holoscan-setup/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill holoscan-setup -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills --path skills/holoscan-setup
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/holoscan-setup/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add NVIDIA/skills --skill holoscan-setup -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/NVIDIA/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/holoscan-setup/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a Holoscan SDK 5.x install method for a given host
- tell an existing 4.x install from a usable 5.x one
- check driver and runtime compatibility for the chosen artifact
- see whether the host meets CUDA 13 and glibc requirements
- find a source alternative when Early Access binaries are unavailable

## Example prompts
- check my host and tell me which Holoscan 5.x install method fits
- I need Holoscan 5.x with Python modules on Ubuntu 24.04 — what should I install
- I'm on ARM64 with CUDA 12, can I install Holoscan 5.x

# Holoscan 5.x Setup

## Establish the target

Determine the requested 5.x release or source branch and whether the user needs
C++, Python, specific modules, or SDK development. Read the release notes and
[SDK installation guide](https://docs.nvidia.com/holoscan/sdk-user-guide/setup/sdk-installation)
with the matching 5.x version selected. An unversioned page may describe 4.x;
for a development checkout use its `docs/sdk_installation.mdx` and `DEVELOP.md`.
Treat Early Access binary methods as tentative until the exact artifacts are
confirmed published. Package-name registration alone is not availability.

## Inspect and assess

Use read-only checks on the intended Linux host:

```bash
uname -m
cat /etc/os-release
nvidia-smi
python3 --version
getconf GNU_LIBC_VERSION
docker --version
docker info
```

Report unavailable tools separately from incompatible hardware. Inspect an
existing venv or SDK checkout only at user-selected or relevant known paths.
Use `python -m pip list` in the intended environment and `dpkg-query -W 'holoscan*'`
on Debian systems to distinguish 4.x installations from usable 5.x ones.
A GPU passthrough check that runs/pulls an image is a separate execution step;
a Docker version check alone does not establish passthrough.

The 5.0 baseline is CUDA 13 with dGPU support, Ubuntu 24.04 native packages,
and x86_64/SBSA arm64. Wheels require glibc 2.39 and regular CPython 3.12–3.14.
The `nvidia-smi` CUDA value describes driver capability, not toolkit presence.
Check driver/runtime compatibility for the selected artifact; a CUDA 12-only
host cannot be routed to a nonexistent 5.x CUDA 12 package. ARM64 does not
establish Tegra/iGPU support. Confirm hardware-specific support before offering
installation on Jetson, IGX, DGX Spark, or Grace systems.

To check an already-pulled image, run the bundled helper from this skill's
installation directory with the **full confirmed 5.x tag**, for example:

```bash
bash scripts/check_ngc_image.sh v5.0.0-cuda13
```

It inspects the local image only, makes no registry request, and does not prove
