## What it does

The skill reviews offer letters and restrictive covenants, including non-compete and non-solicitation clauses. It focuses on where the worker actually lives rather than company headquarters. That distinction matters for remote hires.

It checks worker classification (exempt versus non-exempt), pay-transparency requirements, and salary-history restrictions. Rules are researched fresh for each hire rather than loaded from static storage. If a connected legal research tool yields few results, the skill halts instead of silently guessing from model memory.

Running it requires the practice configuration file at `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/employment-legal/CLAUDE.md`. Output citations carry origin tags such as `[Westlaw]` or `[web search — verify]`. That exposes lower-confidence sources right away.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill hiring-review -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hiring-review/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hiring-review/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill hiring-review -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hiring-review/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill hiring-review -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hiring-review/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal hiring-review
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hiring-review/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hiring-review/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill hiring-review -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
## When to use it
- verify applicable state employment law based on candidate location
- check non-compete and non-solicit enforceability in a target jurisdiction
- audit job duties and salary against exempt classification thresholds
- flag salary-history inquiry restrictions and pay-transparency obligations
## Example prompts
- /hiring-review offer_letter_senior_dev.pdf
- Review this offer letter for a remote engineer located in California
- Can we enforce a non-compete covenant for a new hire in Massachusetts?
# /hiring-review
1. Load `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/employment-legal/CLAUDE.md` → jurisdictional footprint, hiring review triggers, restrictive covenant policy.
2. Use the workflow below.
3. Check: jurisdiction, classification, restrictive covenants, background check compliance.
4. Flag anything that hits the jurisdiction-specific escalation table.
## Matter context
**Matter context.** Check `## Matter workspaces` in the practice-level CLAUDE.md. If `Enabled` is `✗` (the default for in-house users), skip the rest of this paragraph — skills use practice-level context and the matter machinery is invisible. If enabled and there is no active matter, ask: "Which matter is this for? Run `/employment-legal:matter-workspace switch <slug>` or say `practice-level`." Load the active matter's `matter.md` for matter-specific context and overrides. Write outputs to the matter folder at `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/employment-legal/matters/<matter-slug>/`. Never read another matter's files unless `Cross-matter context` is `on`.
## Purpose
Offer letters are mostly boilerplate until they're not. The jurisdiction check
and the restrictive-covenant check are where this skill earns its keep. The
skill does not state the law — every jurisdiction-specific rule is researched
and cited at the time of review.
## Load context
`~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/employment-legal/CLAUDE.md` → jurisdictional footprint, hiring review triggers, restrictive
covenant policy, offer letter template location.
## Output header
Prepend the work-product header from `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/employment-legal/CLAUDE.md` → `## Outputs` (it differs by user role — see `## Who's using this`).
## Workflow
### Step 1: Jurisdiction
Where will this person work? Not where HQ is — where *they* are.
If remote: their home state/country governs. If hybrid: usually their home
state, but check the offer letter's choice-of-law clause (may or may not hold
up).
Check the jurisdiction table in `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/employment-legal/CLAUDE.md` for this state/country. If it's
not in the table — new jurisdiction — flag that: "First hire in [state]. The
