# helm-generator

Scaffolds a Helm chart, its helpers and resource templates from your description. Handy when you need a chart with Deployment, Service and Ingress without writing boilerplate.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through seven stages: gather requirements, look up CRD docs, scaffold the chart, generate standard helpers, write resource templates, build `values.yaml`, then validate. During requirements it asks about the container image, ports, resources, probes, autoscaling and storage instead of guessing.

Scaffolding runs through `scripts/generate_chart_structure.sh` with flags `--image`, `--port`, `--target-port`, `--type`, `--with-templates`, `--with-ingress`, `--with-hpa`. Image parsing varies: `nginx:1.27` splits into repository and tag, `registry.local:5000/team/app` keeps the repository intact, and a digest reference skips tag concatenation. Combining `--tag` with a digest image does not work. When the script would overwrite an existing chart or `templates/_helpers.tpl`, it asks first; `--force` skips the prompt.

A second script, `scripts/generate_standard_helpers.sh`, writes the helpers: `name`, `fullname`, `chart`, `labels`, `selectorLabels`, `serviceAccountName`. If script execution is blocked, copy `assets/_helpers-template.tpl` and swap `CHARTNAME` for the chart name. For CRDs the skill queries Context7 first and falls back to the operator's own docs. Hand the finished chart to the `helm-validator` skill for linting.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill helm-generator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/helm-generator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/helm-generator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill helm-generator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/helm-generator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill helm-generator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/helm-generator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills helm-generator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/helm-generator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill helm-generator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --path devops-skills-plugin/skills/helm-generator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/helm-generator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills --skill helm-generator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/akin-ozer/cc-devops-skills/tree/HEAD/devops-skills-plugin/skills/helm-generator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a new Helm chart from an app description
- generate `Chart.yaml`, `values.yaml` and `templates/` in one run
- convert raw Kubernetes manifests into a Helm chart
- add standard helpers and labels to an existing chart layout
- wire Ingress and HPA templates into a chart

## Example prompts
- create a Helm chart for nginx:1.27 with service port 80 and targetPort 8080
- scaffold mychart with deployment and service templates, include ingress
- convert my Kubernetes manifests into a Helm chart with helpers

# Helm Chart Generator

## Overview

Generate production-ready Helm charts with deterministic scaffolding, standard helpers, reusable templates, and validation loops.

## When to Use This Skill

| Use helm-generator | Use OTHER skill |
|-------------------|-----------------|
| Create new Helm charts | **helm-validator**: Validate/lint existing charts |
| Generate Helm templates | **k8s-yaml-generator**: Raw K8s YAML (no Helm) |
| Convert K8s manifests to Helm | **k8s-debug**: Debug deployed resources |
| Implement CRDs in Helm | **k8s-yaml-validator**: Validate K8s manifests |

### Trigger Phrases

Use this skill when prompts include phrases like:
- "create Helm chart"
- "scaffold Helm chart"
- "generate Helm templates"
- "convert manifests to Helm chart"
- "build chart with Deployment/Service/Ingress"

## Execution Flow

Follow these stages in order. Do not skip required stages.

### Stage 1: Gather Requirements (Required)

Collect:
- Scope: full chart, specific templates, or conversion from manifests
- Workload: `deployment`, `statefulset`, or `daemonset`
- Image reference: repository, optional tag, or digest
- Ports: service port and container target port (separate values)
- Runtime settings: resources, probes, autoscaling, ingress, storage
- Security: service account, security contexts, optional RBAC/network policies

Use `request_user_input` when critical fields are missing.

If `request_user_input` is unavailable, ask in normal chat and continue with explicit assumptions.

| Missing Information | Question to Ask |
|---------------------|-----------------|
| Image repository/tag | "What container image should be used? (e.g., nginx:1.25)" |
| Service port | "What service port should be exposed?" |
```
