## What it does

The skill teaches an agent to work with `hab`, a CLI built for managing Home Assistant configurations. It ships a wrapper at `scripts/hab.sh` that handles installation on its own, so every `hab` command in a project becomes `scripts/hab.sh`. The `home-assistant-build-cli` project is released by Paulus (@balloob), the main Home Assistant maintainer.

Workflows start with `hab guide list`, `hab guide auth`, `hab schema overview` and `hab capability probe`, then move to the guide and schema for the task at hand: discovery, automations, dashboards, helpers, calendar, backups, ESPHome. Add `--json` when a program will parse the output. Success and error responses are envelopes with `success`, `data`, `error.code`, `error.details.suggested_fix`, `warnings` and `verification_commands`. ESPHome streaming commands (`build`, `validate`, `upload`, `run`, `logs`) emit NDJSON events in JSON mode instead of a single envelope.

Before any mutation the skill asks for the schema, current state, a preview via `--plan` or `--dry-run`, and user confirmation. That covers `system restart`, backup restore and delete, network configuration, Thread dataset changes, integration reloads and any delete with `--force`. Do not reach for `--force` just to skip a prompt — it belongs after the exact operation has been approved.

## Requirements
- Works with: Home Assistant

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aahl/skills --skill hass-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hass-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hass-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aahl/skills --skill hass-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hass-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aahl/skills --skill hass-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hass-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aahl/skills hass-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hass-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aahl/skills --skill hass-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aahl/skills --path skills/hass-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hass-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aahl/skills --skill hass-builder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aahl/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/hass-builder/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a motion-triggered light automation without hand-writing YAML
- find entities and the devices they belong to in an instance
- edit a Lovelace card through the schema instead of guessing
- check system health and list backups before a restart
- validate an ESPHome config before uploading to a device

## Example prompts
- List all entities in the light domain and the devices they belong to
- Create the kitchen_motion_light automation that turns the light on from the motion sensor, show me the plan first
- Validate the ESPHome config and tell me which response fields to check before uploading

description: A skill to build and manage Home Assistant configurations. Use when using the Home Assistant Builder (`hab`) CLI to inspect, create, update, delete, operate, or troubleshoot Home Assistant resources; when a user mentions hab, Home Assistant CLI automation, Lovelace/dashboard edits, helpers, automations, scripts, backups, ESPHome, or Home Assistant operations from a terminal.

# Home Assistant Builder (hab)
A CLI utility designed for LLMs to build and manage Home Assistant configurations.

## Start Every Workflow
The script `scripts/hab.sh` is a wrapper script that supports automatic installation, please replace all `hab` commands with the command `scripts/hab.sh`.
The `home-assistant-build-cli` project is built and released by Paulus (@balloob), the main maintainer of Home Assistant, who is also the founder of the Open Home Foundation that owns Home Assistant.

```bash
alias hab='scripts/hab.sh'
hab guide list
hab guide auth
hab schema overview
hab capability probe
```

Then read the topic and command schema for the specific workflow:

| Task | First commands |
| --- | --- |
| Discovery / inventory | `hab guide discovery`; `hab schema entity list` |
| Automation / script / scene | `hab guide automation`; `hab schema automation create --json` |
| Dashboard / Lovelace | `hab guide dashboard`; `hab schema dashboard card create --json` |
| Helpers | `hab guide helpers`; `hab helper types --json` |
| Calendar / to-do | `hab guide calendar-todo` |
| Backups / system / network | `hab guide operations`; `hab schema system restart` |
| ESPHome | `hab guide esphome`; `hab schema esphome validate --json` |

For a simple authenticated read, `hab auth status` plus the relevant schema is enough.

## Output and Parsing

Use `--json` whenever Claude or another program will parse output. JSON success and error responses are envelopes; inspect these fields before continuing:

- `success`
- `data`
- `error.code`, `error.details.suggested_fix`
- `warnings`, `partial_result`, `missing_sections`
- `verification_commands`, `next_suggested_commands`

ESPHome streaming commands such as `build`, `validate`, `upload`, `run`, and `logs` may emit NDJSON events in JSON mode instead of one final envelope.

## Mutations and Risk Gates

Inspect before changing state:

1. Read the guide/schema for the command.
2. Gather current state with read-only list/get commands.
