## What it does

The skill hands the agent working Vault CLI commands and configs: enabling KV v2, database and AWS engines, setting up PKI, AppRole, Kubernetes and OIDC auth, writing policies. Paths and parameters come from the skill instead of being improvised.

Inside are HCL and bash examples plus application integration: the `hvac` Python client and the Kubernetes sidecar injector. You need a Vault server (dev or production), the Vault CLI installed and network access to it. Without a reachable server the commands have nothing to talk to.

The production section cuts off mid-manifest, so for the sidecar injector plan on finishing with Vault's own docs. The sample policies lean on explicit deny rules — copy them into your cluster as-is and access to other paths closes immediately.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill hashicorp-vault -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hashicorp-vault/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hashicorp-vault/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill hashicorp-vault -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hashicorp-vault/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill hashicorp-vault -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hashicorp-vault/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills hashicorp-vault
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hashicorp-vault/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill hashicorp-vault -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path security/secrets/hashicorp-vault
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hashicorp-vault/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill hashicorp-vault -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/security/secrets/hashicorp-vault/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- enable KV v2 and lay out secrets by path
- hand an app short-lived PostgreSQL credentials instead of a static password
- set up AppRole for CI so no root token sits in the pipeline
- issue an internal certificate through the PKI engine
- write a policy with explicit denies on other secrets

## Example prompts
- enable KV v2 at secret and write the myapp config there
- configure the database engine for PostgreSQL with a readonly role at 1h TTL
- create the myapp policy with read on secret/data/myapp/* and deny elsewhere

# HashiCorp Vault

Centrally manage secrets, encryption, and access with HashiCorp Vault.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Centralizing secrets management
- Implementing dynamic credentials
- Managing PKI and certificates
- Encrypting sensitive data
- Meeting compliance requirements

## Prerequisites

- Vault server (dev or production)
- Vault CLI installed
- Network access to Vault

## Quick Start

### Development Server

```bash
# Start dev server
vault server -dev
# Set environment
export VAULT_ADDR='http://127.0.0.1:8200'
export VAULT_TOKEN='root'
# Verify connection
vault status
```

### Production Deployment

```hcl
# config.hcl
storage "raft" {
  path = "/opt/vault/data"
  node_id = "vault-1"
}
listener "tcp" {
  address = "0.0.0.0:8200"
  tls_cert_file = "/opt/vault/tls/vault.crt"
  tls_key_file = "/opt/vault/tls/vault.key"
}
api_addr = "https://vault.example.com:8200"
cluster_addr = "https://vault.example.com:8201"
ui = true
```

```bash
# Initialize Vault
vault operator init -key-shares=5 -key-threshold=3
# Unseal (run 3 times with different keys)
vault operator unseal <key-1>
vault operator unseal <key-2>
vault operator unseal <key-3>
# Login
vault login <root-token>
```

## Secret Engines

### KV Secrets

```bash
# Enable KV v2
vault secrets enable -path=secret kv-v2
# Write secret
vault kv put secret/myapp/config \
  username="admin" \
  password="s3cr3t"
# Read secret
vault kv get secret/myapp/config
vault kv get -field=password secret/myapp/config
# Update secret
vault kv put secret/myapp/config \
  username="admin" \
  password="new-password"
# List secrets
vault kv list secret/
# Delete secret
vault kv delete secret/myapp/config
# Version history
vault kv metadata get secret/myapp/config
```

### Database Secrets

```bash
# Enable database engine
vault secrets enable database
# Configure PostgreSQL connection
vault write database/config/postgresql \
  plugin_name=postgresql-database-plugin \
  connection_url="postgresql://{{username}}:{{password}}@localhost:5432/mydb" \
  allowed_roles="readonly,readwrite" \
  username="vault" \
  password="vault-password"
# Create role
vault write database/roles/readonly \
  db_name=postgresql \
  creation_statements="CREATE ROLE \"{{name}}\" WITH LOGIN PASSWORD '{{password}}' VALID UNTIL '{{expiration}}'; \
