# harper-best-practices

A skill that feeds your agent the rules for building Harper apps: schemas, automatic APIs, auth, deployment. Useful when the agent writes Harper code.

## What it does

The skill splits into four categories by priority. First comes `schema-`: tables defined with GraphQL schemas, relationships between tables, vector indexes for similarity search, the Blob type for binary storage. Then `api-`: the REST and WebSocket APIs Harper generates on its own, query parameters for filtering, sorting and pagination, plus authentication and sessions inside resources.

The `logic-` group covers extensions: custom REST endpoints in JavaScript or TypeScript, extra logic on top of generated table resources, the `tables` object for programmatic requests, caching from external sources. The `ops-` group handles deployment to Harper Fabric through the CLI, including rollback by activating a previous release's `deployment_id`, shipping from GitHub Actions with OIDC trusted publishing so CI keeps no Harper credential, logging, and loading `.env` variables with the loadEnv plugin.

Every rule lives in its own file under `rules/`, with the full set compiled into `AGENTS.md`. The agent reads the task first, then opens the matching file: `schema-` for a new table, `logic-` and `api-` when extending functionality, `ops-` before you ship. Moving a project to Harper v5? There is a rule for the breaking changes.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HarperFast/skills --skill harper-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/harper-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/harper-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HarperFast/skills --skill harper-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/harper-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HarperFast/skills --skill harper-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/harper-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install HarperFast/skills harper-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/harper-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HarperFast/skills --skill harper-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/HarperFast/skills --path harper-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/harper-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add HarperFast/skills --skill harper-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/HarperFast/skills/tree/HEAD/harper-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design Harper tables with GraphQL schemas
- wire filtering and pagination into a REST API
- add custom REST endpoints in TypeScript
- deploy an app to Harper Fabric and roll back a release
- turn on a vector index for similarity search

## Example prompts
- Add an orders table to Harper following the schema- rules
- Set up a WebSocket subscription on table changes
- Prepare a Harper Fabric deploy from GitHub Actions

# Harper Best Practices

Guidelines for building scalable, secure, and performant applications on Harper. These practices cover everything from initial schema design to advanced deployment strategies.

## When to Use

Reference these guidelines when:

- Defining or modifying database schemas
- Implementing or extending REST/WebSocket APIs
- Handling authentication and session management
- Working with custom resources and extensions
- Optimizing data storage and retrieval (Blobs, Vector Indexing)
- Deploying applications to Harper Fabric

## How It Works

1. Review the requirements for the task (schema design, API needs, or infrastructure setup).
2. Consult the relevant category under "Rule Categories by Priority" to understand the impact of your decisions.
3. Apply specific rules from the "Quick Reference" section below by reading their detailed rule files.
4. If you're building a new table, prioritize the `schema-` rules.
5. If you're extending functionality, consult the `logic-` and `api-` rules.
6. Validate your implementation against the `ops-` rules before deployment.

## Examples

See the concrete examples embedded in each rule subsection below (GraphQL schemas, REST query patterns, and deployment workflow snippets).

<!-- BEGIN GENERATED INDEX -->

## Rule Categories by Priority

| Priority | Category             | Impact | Prefix    |
| -------- | -------------------- | ------ | --------- |
| 1        | Schema & Data Design | HIGH   | `schema-` |
| 2        | API & Communication  | HIGH   | `api-`    |
| 3        | Logic & Extension    | MEDIUM | `logic-`  |
| 4        | Infrastructure & Ops | MEDIUM | `ops-`    |
