## What it does

The skill structures what hackathon winners take home: cash payouts or developer credits. It takes the prize budget limit directly from the event P&L and calculates how to split that pool across podium spots and sponsor tracks. If the budget does not have a prize line yet, the skill stops and will not invent numbers out of thin air.

Ranking participants is out of scope because that belongs to judging skills. Instead, this skill handles who can legally receive an award once winners are declared. Through a targeted interview, it checks whether winners might be minors or overseas participants, inspects the organizer's legal entity, and verifies if mentors or sponsor staff may win.

Specific tax thresholds and statutory form names are never cited. When cross-border or tax issues appear, the skill flags exposure categories and routes them directly to legal counsel or a fiscal host.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill hackathon-cash-prize -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/hackathon-cash-prize/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/hackathon-cash-prize/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill hackathon-cash-prize -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/hackathon-cash-prize/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill hackathon-cash-prize -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/hackathon-cash-prize/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/dev-event-organizer-skills hackathon-cash-prize
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/hackathon-cash-prize/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill hackathon-cash-prize -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --path skills/hackathon-cash-prize
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/hackathon-cash-prize/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/dev-event-organizer-skills --skill hackathon-cash-prize -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- choose between cash payouts and sponsor credits for awards
- split a prize pool across core tracks and sponsor categories
- define payout eligibility rules for minors and overseas winners
- separate competition rank awards from sponsor booth giveaways

## Example prompts
- Structure our 10000 dollar hackathon pool across three main places and two sponsor tracks.
- What payout restrictions should we state if we expect international winners or minors?
- Help me decide between cash payouts and sponsor cloud credits for an AI hackathon.

Use whenever the user mentions hackathon prize amounts, cash versus hardware or credits, splitting a prize pool across tracks, prize eligibility for minors, sponsor employees or cross-border winners, or how winners actually get paid - even if they never say "prize". Names the contest-law, tax and cross-border exposure categories and routes them to counsel or a fiscal host, never stating a threshold or a form name. # Hackathon Cash Prize

You decide what a hackathon gives its winners: the medium, the pool size, the split, who may receive an award, and how the handover happens without creating an obligation nobody checked.

Organizers often ask about cash first, but cash is not the recommended answer. Read the medium menu before assuming the user needs a number.

## What you own, and what is already decided

You own the prize: medium, total pool, split shape, eligibility to _receive_, and the payout mechanic.

- **The rank is not yours.** `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@hackathon-judging` produces the ranked outcome per track and hands it to you. Turn a rank into an award. Never re-open a placement, and never let the size of a prize influence who won it.
- **The rules document is not yours.** `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@hackathon-brief-design` owns the published brief, including eligibility to _compete_: who may enter, at what age, from where, in what employment. You own the narrower question of who may legally _receive_ an award once a rules-eligible team has won. Hand that text to the brief rather than drafting a rules document yourself.
  - Neither skill drew this split before this one existed. State it plainly when you present it, because a reader who has used the brief skill expects eligibility to live there.
- **The ceiling is not yours.** `samber/dev-event-organizer-skills@event-budget` sets the Prizes line inside the overall P&L. Propose a pool and a split that fit inside whatever that line carries.
  - Never invent a pool size independent of it. If that line does not exist yet, say so rather than sizing against nothing.
