## What it does

The daemon scans your source files, splits code into chunks of roughly 512 tokens, generates embeddings through the configured provider and stores the vectors in the configured backend. After that it watches for changes: saving a file re-embeds its chunks, a new file gets indexed, a deleted one drops out of the index, and a rename updates the path while keeping the vectors.

Day-to-day commands are short. `grepai watch` runs in the foreground, `grepai watch --background` detaches it, `grepai watch --status` and `grepai watch --stop` check and stop it. The `debounce_ms` setting in `.grepai/config.yaml` groups rapid writes together; the skill suggests starting at 500, because editors often write a file several times on save. Lower values feel snappier and cause more reindexing.

Auto-start is covered for launchd on macOS and systemd on Linux, with logs in `~/.grepai/daemon.log`. Monorepos can use workspaces: `grepai workspace create`, then `grepai workspace add` per project. If the daemon refuses to start with an embedder connection error, check that your provider is up — `ollama serve` for Ollama. On Linux, missed file changes usually mean the inotify watch limit needs raising.

# GrepAI Watch Daemon

## What the Watch Daemon Does

The watch daemon:
1. **Scans** all source files in your project
2. **Chunks** code into segments (~512 tokens)

4. **Stores** vectors in your configured backend
5. **Monitors** for file changes in real-time
6. **Updates** the index when files change

## Basic Usage

### Start Watching (Foreground)

### Debounce Explained

When you save a file, editors often write multiple times quickly. Debouncing waits for changes to settle:
