## What it does

This skill walks through PostgreSQL with the pgvector extension as the storage backend for GrepAI. It fits cases where a local index file stops working: a shared index across a team, codebases past 10K files, concurrent searches. Data survives machine restarts, and you keep standard database tooling.

You need PostgreSQL 14+ with pgvector, a database user allowed to create tables, and network access to the server. For development the skill suggests a `pgvector/pgvector:pg16` container; on an existing server install `postgresql-16-pgvector` and run `CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS vector;`. Then set `backend: postgres` and a DSN in `.grepai/config.yaml`, or point it at `DATABASE_URL`.

GrepAI creates the `embeddings` table and the IVFFlat index itself. When searches slow down, the skill suggests raising `work_mem` and rebuilding the index with a `lists` value. One `grepai watch` daemon per codebase, any number of searches. Coming from GOB, delete `.grepai/index.gob` and re-index.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-storage-postgres -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/grepai-storage-postgres/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/grepai-storage-postgres/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-storage-postgres -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/grepai-storage-postgres/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-storage-postgres -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/grepai-storage-postgres/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills grepai-storage-postgres
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/grepai-storage-postgres/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-storage-postgres -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --path skills/storage/grepai-storage-postgres
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/grepai-storage-postgres/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-storage-postgres -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/storage/grepai-storage-postgres/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- share one GrepAI index across a team
- index a codebase with 10K+ files
- run several searches against the index at once
- move GrepAI storage off the GOB file onto PostgreSQL
- spin up PostgreSQL with pgvector in Docker for development

## Example prompts
- Set up GrepAI storage on PostgreSQL with pgvector
- Point GrepAI at our shared PostgreSQL, take the DSN from DATABASE_URL
- Migrate the GrepAI index from GOB to PostgreSQL and re-index the project

# GrepAI Storage with PostgreSQL

This skill covers using PostgreSQL with the pgvector extension as the storage backend for GrepAI.

## When to Use This Skill

- Team environments with shared index
- Large codebases (10K+ files)
- Need concurrent access
- Integration with existing PostgreSQL infrastructure

## Prerequisites

1. PostgreSQL 14+ with pgvector extension
2. Database user with create table permissions
3. Network access to PostgreSQL server

## Advantages

| Benefit | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| 👥 **Team sharing** | Multiple users can access same index |
| 📏 **Scalable** | Handles large codebases |
| 🔄 **Concurrent** | Multiple simultaneous searches |
| 💾 **Persistent** | Data survives machine restarts |
| 🔧 **Familiar** | Standard database tooling |

## Setting Up PostgreSQL with pgvector

### Option 1: Docker (Recommended for Development)

```bash
# Run PostgreSQL with pgvector
docker run -d \
  --name grepai-postgres \
  -e POSTGRES_USER=grepai \
  -e POSTGRES_PASSWORD=grepai \
  -e POSTGRES_DB=grepai \
  -p 5432:5432 \
  pgvector/pgvector:pg16
```

### Option 2: Install on Existing PostgreSQL

```bash
# Install pgvector extension (Ubuntu/Debian)
sudo apt install postgresql-16-pgvector
# Or compile from source
git clone https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector.git
cd pgvector
make
sudo make install
```

Then enable the extension:

```sql
-- Connect to your database
CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS vector;
```

### Option 3: Managed Services

- **Supabase:** pgvector included by default
- **Neon:** pgvector available
- **AWS RDS:** Install pgvector extension
- **Azure Database:** pgvector available

## Configuration

### Basic Configuration

```yaml
# .grepai/config.yaml
store:
  backend: postgres
  postgres:
    dsn: postgres://user:password@localhost:5432/grepai
```

### With Environment Variable

```yaml
store:
  backend: postgres
  postgres:
    dsn: ${DATABASE_URL}
```

Set the environment variable:
```bash
export DATABASE_URL="postgres://user:password@localhost:5432/grepai"
```

### Full DSN Options

```yaml
store:
  backend: postgres
  postgres:
    dsn: postgres://user:password@host:5432/database?sslmode=require
```

DSN components:
- `user`: Database username
- `password`: Database password
- `host`: Server hostname or IP
- `5432`: Port (default: 5432)
- `database`: Database name
