## What it does

This skill supplies the assistant with parameter schemas and response formats for the GrepAI MCP server. It covers five tools: embedding-based search with `grepai_search`, upstream caller tracking via `grepai_trace_callers`, downstream dependency discovery via `grepai_trace_callees`, call hierarchy mapping through `grepai_trace_graph`, and index monitoring with `grepai_index_status`.

All tools require an active local server running via `grepai mcp-serve`. Without that running process, tool execution fails. The guide also details the `compact: true` flag, which abbreviates JSON response keys to preserve model context.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-mcp-tools -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/grepai-mcp-tools/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/grepai-mcp-tools/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-mcp-tools -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/grepai-mcp-tools/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-mcp-tools -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/grepai-mcp-tools/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills grepai-mcp-tools
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/grepai-mcp-tools/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-mcp-tools -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --path skills/integration/grepai-mcp-tools
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/grepai-mcp-tools/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-mcp-tools -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/integration/grepai-mcp-tools/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find code semantically using vector embeddings
- trace caller and callee hierarchies across files
- inspect GrepAI index health and daemon status
- reduce token usage with abbreviated JSON keys

## Example prompts
- Check the GrepAI index health with grepai_index_status
- Search for authentication middleware with grepai_search using compact mode
- Trace the call graph starting from main with depth 3

# GrepAI MCP Tools Reference

This skill provides a complete reference for all tools available through GrepAI's MCP server.

## When to Use This Skill

- Understanding available MCP tools
- Learning tool parameters and options
- Integrating GrepAI with AI assistants
- Debugging MCP tool usage

## Starting the MCP Server

```bash
grepai mcp-serve
```

The server exposes tools via the Model Context Protocol.

## Available Tools

### 1. grepai_search

Semantic code search using embeddings.

#### Parameters

| Parameter | Type | Required | Default | Description |
|-----------|------|----------|---------|-------------|
| `query` | string | Yes | - | Search query describing what to find |
| `limit` | number | No | 10 | Maximum results to return |
| `compact` | boolean | No | false | Return compact output (no content) |
| `format` | string | No | "json" | Output format: "json" or "toon" (v0.26.0+) |

#### Example Request

```json
{
  "tool": "grepai_search",
  "parameters": {
    "query": "user authentication middleware",
    "limit": 5,
    "compact": true,
    "format": "toon"
  }
}
```

#### Response (Compact)

```json
{
  "q": "user authentication middleware",
  "r": [
    {"s": 0.92, "f": "src/auth/middleware.go", "l": "15-45"},
    {"s": 0.85, "f": "src/auth/jwt.go", "l": "23-55"},
    {"s": 0.78, "f": "src/handlers/auth.go", "l": "10-40"}
  ],
  "t": 3
}
```

#### Response (Full)

```json
{
  "query": "user authentication middleware",
  "results": [
    {
      "score": 0.92,
      "file": "src/auth/middleware.go",
