## What it does

This skill instructs your coding assistant on configuring indexing filters in `.grepai/config.yaml`. GrepAI respects `.gitignore` automatically, yet complex codebases often require extra rules. Generated Swagger specs, Protobuf files, test fixtures, and package lockfiles unnecessarily bloat the search index.

The guidance covers glob syntax, directory patterns, and pre-built presets for Go, Python, JavaScript, Rust, and Java. Rather than excluding test suites entirely, you can apply search penalties inside `search.boost.penalties` to demote their rank in results.

Patterns containing wildcards like `"*.min.js"` require explicit quotation marks, or the YAML parser will fail. When you adjust ignore settings, reset the database by calling `grepai watch --stop`, deleting `.grepai/index.gob`, and launching `grepai watch` again.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-ignore-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/grepai-ignore-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/grepai-ignore-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-ignore-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/grepai-ignore-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-ignore-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/grepai-ignore-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills grepai-ignore-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/grepai-ignore-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-ignore-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --path skills/configuration/grepai-ignore-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/grepai-ignore-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-ignore-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/configuration/grepai-ignore-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Exclude generated code and mocks from GrepAI search results
- Reduce `.grepai/index.gob` file size on large repositories
- Configure test folder ignore rules or assign ranking penalties
- Generate stack-specific ignore lists for Python, Go, or Node.js

## Example prompts
- Create a `.grepai/config.yaml` for a Go project, excluding protobuf files and mocks
- Configure GrepAI relevance penalties for test files instead of excluding them
- Add build outputs and package lockfiles to GrepAI ignore patterns

# GrepAI Ignore Patterns

This skill covers how to configure ignore patterns to exclude files and directories from GrepAI indexing.

## When to Use This Skill

- Excluding test files from search results
- Ignoring generated or vendored code
- Reducing index size by excluding unnecessary files
- Customizing which files GrepAI indexes

## How Ignore Patterns Work

GrepAI uses two sources for ignore patterns:

1. **`.grepai/config.yaml`** - Custom patterns you define
2. **`.gitignore`** - Automatically respected

## Configuration Location

```yaml
# .grepai/config.yaml
ignore:
  - pattern1
  - pattern2
```

## Pattern Syntax

### Directory Patterns

```yaml
ignore:
  # Exact directory name (matches anywhere)
  - node_modules
  - vendor
  - __pycache__
  # With trailing slash (explicit directory)
  - dist/
  - build/
  - coverage/
```

### File Patterns

```yaml
ignore:
  # Exact filename
  - package-lock.json
  - yarn.lock
  # Wildcard patterns
  - "*.min.js"
  - "*.min.css"
  - "*.map"
  - "*.lock"
```

### Path Patterns

```yaml
ignore:
  # Paths containing substring
  - /tests/
  - /spec/
  - /__tests__/
  # Specific paths
  - src/generated/
  - api/swagger/
```

### Glob Patterns

```yaml
ignore:
  # Double star (recursive)
  - "**/test/**"
  - "**/mock/**"
  # Single star (single level)
  - "*.test.js"
  - "*.spec.ts"
  - "*_test.go"
```

## Default Ignore Patterns

GrepAI's default configuration includes:

```yaml
ignore:
  # Version control
  - .git
  - .svn
  - .hg
  # GrepAI itself
  - .grepai
  # Package managers
  - node_modules
  - vendor
  - .npm
  - .yarn
  # Build outputs
  - target
  - dist
  - build
  - out
  # Cache directories
  - __pycache__
  - .pytest_cache
  - .mypy_cache
  - .cache
  # Framework outputs
  - .next
  - .nuxt
  - .output
```

## Common Ignore Configurations

### JavaScript/TypeScript Project

```yaml
ignore:
  - node_modules
  - dist
  - build
  - coverage
  - .nyc_output
  - "*.min.js"
  - "*.bundle.js"
  - "*.map"
  - package-lock.json
  - yarn.lock
  - pnpm-lock.yaml
```

### Go Project

```yaml
ignore:
  - vendor
  - bin
  - "*.pb.go"       # Protobuf generated
  - "*_mock.go"     # Mocks
  - "mocks/"
  - go.sum
```

### Python Project

```yaml
ignore:
  - __pycache__
  - .pytest_cache
  - .mypy_cache
  - .venv
  - venv
  - env
  - "*.pyc"
  - "*.pyo"
  - .eggs
  - "*.egg-info"
  - dist
  - build
```

### Rust Project

```yaml
ignore:
  - target
  - Cargo.lock
  - "*.rlib"
```

### Java/Kotlin Project

```yaml
ignore:
  - target
  - build
  - .gradle
