## What it does

The skill walks through wiring LM Studio into GrepAI as an embedding provider. You download the app, grab a model from the Search tab, start the local server, then point `.grepai/config.yaml` at it. Config snippets cover the basic case, a custom port, and explicit dimensions.

Models are laid out side by side: `nomic-embed-text-v1.5` at 768 dimensions is the recommended pick, `bge-small-en-v1.5` at 384 suits smaller codebases and faster indexing, `bge-large-en-v1.5` at 1024 trades speed for accuracy. A comparison table lines up size, speed and quality. There is also a headless CLI mode for server environments.

The catch: the server only lives while the app is open. Close LM Studio and embeddings stop, so GrepAI hits connection refused. The skill covers that in its troubleshooting section, along with a port already in use and slow generation. If you need an always-on background service, the author points to Ollama and gives migration steps: install it, switch the provider in the config, delete `.grepai/index.gob`, then re-index with `grepai watch`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-embeddings-lmstudio -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-embeddings-lmstudio -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-embeddings-lmstudio -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills grepai-embeddings-lmstudio
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-embeddings-lmstudio -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --path skills/embeddings/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills --skill grepai-embeddings-lmstudio -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/yoanbernabeu/grepai-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/embeddings/grepai-embeddings-lmstudio/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- run local embeddings without sending code to a cloud API
- pick a model that fits your codebase size
- point `.grepai/config.yaml` at the LM Studio endpoint
- fix connection refused errors during indexing
- move from LM Studio to Ollama and re-index

## Example prompts
- set up LM Studio as the embedding provider for GrepAI
- which model should I use for indexing a small project
- the LM Studio server isn't responding, help me debug it

# GrepAI Embeddings with LM Studio

This skill covers using LM Studio as the embedding provider for GrepAI, offering a user-friendly GUI for managing local models.

## When to Use This Skill

- Want local embeddings with a graphical interface
- Already using LM Studio for other AI tasks
- Prefer visual model management over CLI
- Need to easily switch between models

## What is LM Studio?

LM Studio is a desktop application for running local LLMs with:
- 🖥️ Graphical user interface
- 📦 Easy model downloading
- 🔌 OpenAI-compatible API
- 🔒 100% private, local processing

## Prerequisites

1. Download LM Studio from [lmstudio.ai](https://lmstudio.ai)
2. Install and launch the application
3. Download an embedding model

## Installation

### Step 1: Download LM Studio

Visit [lmstudio.ai](https://lmstudio.ai) and download for your platform:
- macOS (Intel or Apple Silicon)
- Windows
- Linux

### Step 2: Launch and Download a Model

1. Open LM Studio
2. Go to the **Search** tab
3. Search for an embedding model:
   - `nomic-embed-text-v1.5`
   - `bge-small-en-v1.5`
   - `bge-large-en-v1.5`
4. Click **Download**

### Step 3: Start the Local Server

1. Go to the **Local Server** tab
2. Select your embedding model
3. Click **Start Server**
4. Note the endpoint (default: `http://localhost:1234`)

## Configuration

### Basic Configuration

```yaml
# .grepai/config.yaml
embedder:
  provider: lmstudio
  model: nomic-embed-text-v1.5
  endpoint: http://localhost:1234
```

### With Custom Port

```yaml
embedder:
  provider: lmstudio
  model: nomic-embed-text-v1.5
  endpoint: http://localhost:8080
