# graphql-operations

A skill that keeps your agent writing GraphQL queries, mutations and fragments against the real schema. Useful when it starts inventing field names.

## What it does

The skill sets an order of work for GraphQL. Before writing an operation, the agent looks for the project schema: the `schema` entry in `codegen.ts`, `graphql.config.*` or `apollo.config.*`, then any `*.graphql` SDL files. Only fields, arguments and enum values the schema declares are allowed. The finished operation is saved next to the client's existing operations, and the server schema stays untouched unless you ask for a change.

Inside you get a reference for query, mutation and subscription structure, variable syntax, the `@include` and `@skip` directives, plus separate files: `references/queries.md`, `references/mutations.md`, `references/fragments.md`, `references/variables.md` and `references/tooling.md`. The ground rules are blunt: always name operations, pass dynamic values as variables, request only the fields you need, include `id` on cacheable types, colocate fragments with components. Tool access is limited to `Bash(npm:*)`, `Bash(npx:*)`, `Read`, `Write`, `Edit`, `Glob` and `Grep`.

It works with any GraphQL client — Apollo Client, urql, Relay and others. One catch: the field names shown in the guide are illustrations, not a set that fits your API. If the schema is missing from the repo and no config points to it, the agent stalls on the first field it tries, so check that part first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apollographql/skills --skill graphql-operations -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/graphql-operations/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/graphql-operations/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apollographql/skills --skill graphql-operations -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/graphql-operations/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apollographql/skills --skill graphql-operations -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/graphql-operations/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install apollographql/skills graphql-operations
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/graphql-operations/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apollographql/skills --skill graphql-operations -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/apollographql/skills --path skills/graphql-operations
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/graphql-operations/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add apollographql/skills --skill graphql-operations -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/apollographql/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/graphql-operations/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a query against the actual schema instead of guessing
- move repeated field selections into fragments
- trim unused fields from a heavy query
- replace hardcoded values with variables
- set up type generation and operation linting

## Example prompts
- Write a CreatePost mutation against our schema and save it next to the other operations
- Split this query into fragments and put them in the component files
- Review my operations for over-fetching and hardcoded values

# GraphQL Operations Guide

This guide covers best practices for writing GraphQL operations (queries, mutations, subscriptions) as a client developer. Well-written operations are efficient, type-safe, and maintainable.

## Start From the Schema

Write every operation against the project's schema, not against the examples in this guide.

1. Find the schema before you write anything. Check the `schema` entry in `codegen.ts`, `graphql.config.*`, or `apollo.config.*`, then look for `*.graphql` SDL files.
2. Use only the fields, arguments, and enum values that the schema defines. Field names in this guide, such as `updatedAt` or `orderBy: { field: CREATED_AT, direction: DESC }`, are illustrations.
3. Save the operation as a document next to the client's existing operations. Leave the server schema unchanged unless the user asks for a schema change.

## Operation Basics

### Query Structure

```graphql
query GetUser($id: ID!) {
  user(id: $id) {
    id
    name
    email
  }
}
```

### Mutation Structure

```graphql
mutation CreatePost($input: CreatePostInput!) {
  createPost(input: $input) {
    id
    title
    createdAt
  }
}
```

### Subscription Structure

```graphql
subscription OnMessageReceived($channelId: ID!) {
  messageReceived(channelId: $channelId) {
    id
    content
    sender {
      id
      name
    }
  }
}
```

## Quick Reference

### Operation Naming

| Pattern      | Example                                     |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------- |
| Query        | `GetUser`, `ListPosts`, `SearchProducts`    |
| Mutation     | `CreateUser`, `UpdatePost`, `DeleteComment` |
| Subscription | `OnMessageReceived`, `OnUserStatusChanged`  |

### Variable Syntax

```graphql
# Required variable
query GetUser($id: ID!) { ... }
````
