# graphic-design

A skill that hands your coding agent a graphic design reference: color, typography, grids, file formats. Useful when it lays out UI or preps artwork for print.

## What it does

The skill loads a design reference into the agent: the seven principles of composition, RGB, CMYK, HSL and Hex color models, harmony schemes like complementary and triadic, and color psychology. Typography comes next, with font categories, a size scale from display down to micro, and rules such as keeping to two or three typefaces per project.

Layout gets its own sections: a 12-column grid, an 8pt spacing system, the rule of thirds, and techniques for visual hierarchy. File formats are covered too, raster JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF alongside vector SVG, EPS and PDF, with export guidance. Accessibility shows up as WCAG AA and AAA contrast requirements for text and UI components.

One caveat: the file cuts off inside the tools table, so the full software list isn't there. The skill draws nothing itself. It gives the agent criteria to judge and fix a layout against. If you want an image generator, look elsewhere.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill graphic-design -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/graphic-design/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/graphic-design/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill graphic-design -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/graphic-design/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill graphic-design -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/graphic-design/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install travisjneuman/.claude graphic-design
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/graphic-design/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill graphic-design -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/travisjneuman/.claude --path skills/graphic-design
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/graphic-design/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add travisjneuman/.claude --skill graphic-design -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/travisjneuman/.claude/tree/HEAD/skills/graphic-design/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick a palette that fits a brand
- check text contrast against WCAG
- pair a heading font with a body font
- lay a page out on a 12-column grid
- decide which format to export for web or print

## Example prompts
- Pick a palette for a fintech landing page and check contrast against WCAG AA
- Build a type scale for the docs: headings, body, captions
- Critique my product card layout against the design principles

# Graphic Design

Comprehensive guide for creating professional visual designs across digital and print media.

## Design Fundamentals

### The 7 Principles of Design

| Principle    | Definition                  | Application                       |
| ------------ | --------------------------- | --------------------------------- |
| **Balance** | Visual equilibrium | Symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial |
| **Contrast** | Difference between elements | Size, color, shape, texture |
| **Emphasis** | Focal point creation | Hierarchy guides the eye |
| **Movement** | Visual flow direction | Leading lines, repetition |
| **Pattern** | Repetition of elements | Creates rhythm and unity |
| **Rhythm** | Visual tempo | Regular, flowing, progressive |
| **Unity** | Cohesive whole | Consistent style throughout |

## Color Theory

### Color Models

| Model    | Use Case        | Components                       |
| -------- | --------------- | -------------------------------- |
| **RGB**  | Digital screens | Red, Green, Blue (0-255)         |
| **CMYK** | Print media     | Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black |
| **HSL** | Design tools | Hue, Saturation, Lightness |
| **Hex**  | Web/CSS         | #RRGGBB format                   |

### Color Harmonies

```
Complementary:    Opposite on wheel (high contrast)
Analogous:        Adjacent colors (harmonious)
Triadic:          3 equidistant colors (vibrant)
Split-Comp:       Base + 2 adjacent to complement
Tetradic:         4 colors forming rectangle
Monochromatic:    Single hue, varying saturation/lightness
```

### Color Psychology

| Color      | Associations                | Use For                  |
| ---------- | --------------------------- | ------------------------ |
| **Red** | Energy, urgency, passion | CTAs, sales, warnings |
| **Blue** | Trust, calm, professional | Corporate, tech, finance |
| **Green** | Growth, nature, health | Eco, wellness, money |
| **Yellow** | Optimism, attention, warmth | Highlights, caution |
| **Purple** | Luxury, creativity, wisdom | Premium, creative |
| **Orange** | Enthusiasm, confidence | CTAs, youth brands |
| **Black**  | Sophistication, power       | Luxury, editorial        |
| **White** | Clean, minimal, pure | Modern, healthcare |

### Accessible Color Contrast

```
WCAG AA Requirements:
- Normal text: 4.5:1 minimum contrast ratio
- Large text (18pt+): 3:1 minimum
- UI components: 3:1 minimum
WCAG AAA Requirements:
- Normal text: 7:1 minimum
- Large text: 4.5:1 minimum
