## What it does

The skill guides the migration from standard JVM runtime to standalone native executables. It inspects the project tree to identify Maven or Gradle setups, detects frameworks like Spring Boot or Quarkus, and checks the local runtime. Building native images requires Java 17 or higher, with Java 21+ recommended.

Setup includes configuring `org.graalvm.buildtools` plugins with the `--no-fallback` flag. GraalVM Native Image relies on a closed-world assumption: dynamic reflection or classpath resources cause runtime failures if left unregistered. The skill assists in preparing `reachability-metadata.json` and Spring Boot `RuntimeHints`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill graalvm-native-image -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/graalvm-native-image/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/graalvm-native-image/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill graalvm-native-image -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/graalvm-native-image/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill graalvm-native-image -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/graalvm-native-image/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit graalvm-native-image
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/graalvm-native-image/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill graalvm-native-image -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-java/skills/graalvm-native-image
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/graalvm-native-image/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill graalvm-native-image -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- configure GraalVM Native Build Tools in Maven or Gradle
- resolve runtime ClassNotFoundException and reflection failures in native builds
- generate reachability-metadata.json and resource configurations
- configure Spring Boot 3.x AOT processing with RuntimeHints

## Example prompts
- Configure a Maven native profile with GraalVM build tools for this repository
- Fix missing reflection metadata causing ClassNotFoundException in my native binary
- Set up RuntimeHintsRegistrar for Spring Boot 3 ahead-of-time compilation

# GraalVM Native Image for Java Applications

Expert skill for building high-performance native executables from Java applications using GraalVM Native Image, dramatically reducing startup time and memory consumption.

## Overview

GraalVM Native Image compiles Java applications ahead-of-time (AOT) into standalone native executables. These executables start in milliseconds, require significantly less memory than JVM-based deployments, and are ideal for serverless functions, CLI tools, and microservices where fast startup and low resource usage are critical.

This skill provides a structured workflow to migrate JVM applications to native binaries, covering build tool configuration, framework-specific patterns, reflection metadata management, and an iterative approach to resolving native build failures.

## When to Use

Use this skill when:
- Converting a JVM-based Java application to a GraalVM native executable
- Optimizing cold start times for serverless or containerized deployments
- Reducing memory footprint (RSS) of Java microservices
- Configuring Maven or Gradle with GraalVM Native Build Tools
- Resolving `ClassNotFoundException`, `NoSuchMethodException`, or missing resource errors in native builds
- Generating or editing `reflect-config.json`, `resource-config.json`, or other GraalVM metadata files
- Using the GraalVM tracing agent to collect reachability metadata
- Implementing `RuntimeHints` for Spring Boot native support
- Building native images with Quarkus or Micronaut

## Instructions

### 1. Contextual Project Analysis

Before any configuration, analyze the project to determine the build tool, framework, and dependencies:

**Detect the build tool:**

```bash
# Check for Maven
if [ -f "pom.xml" ]; then
    echo "Build tool: Maven"
    # Check for Maven wrapper
    [ -f "mvnw" ] && echo "Maven wrapper available"
fi
# Check for Gradle
if [ -f "build.gradle" ] || [ -f "build.gradle.kts" ]; then
    echo "Build tool: Gradle"
````

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the c8acfc210c3ce793 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
