## What it does

The skill covers the whole path from a clean Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or RHEL 8/9 box to a GPU server running LLM inference or training. It ships the commands for `nvidia-driver-560` and `cuda-toolkit-12-6`, NVIDIA Container Toolkit setup for Docker, persistence mode, and power limits via `nvidia-smi`.

MIG gets its own section: enabling the mode, listing profiles such as `2g.20gb`, creating several isolated instances, and launching a container against one MIG device. Monitoring is handled with DCGM, `dcgmi diag` at different depths, XID error checks through `dmesg`, and a Prometheus exporter.

You need root or sudo plus internet access for package downloads. The skill suggests starting at 350 W for the power limit, but that is a starting point, not a rule — check the TDP of your card. Turning ECC off frees roughly 6% of VRAM and needs a reboot. A troubleshooting table covers things like `failed to open device` inside a container and low PCIe bandwidth.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gpu-server-management -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/gpu-server-management/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/gpu-server-management/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gpu-server-management -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/gpu-server-management/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gpu-server-management -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/gpu-server-management/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills gpu-server-management
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/gpu-server-management/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gpu-server-management -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path infrastructure/servers/gpu-server-management
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/gpu-server-management/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill gpu-server-management -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/infrastructure/servers/gpu-server-management/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- install NVIDIA drivers and CUDA on a fresh Ubuntu box
- wire Docker up to the GPU with Container Toolkit
- split an A100 or H100 into isolated MIG instances
- catch XID errors and check card health
- scrape GPU metrics into Prometheus with DCGM Exporter

## Example prompts
- Help me set up a new GPU server on Ubuntu 22.04 for LLM inference
- Slice an A100 80GB into four 2g.20gb MIG instances
- Why does my container fail with failed to open device under --gpus all?

# GPU Server Management

Provision, configure, and monitor NVIDIA GPU servers for AI inference and training workloads.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Setting up a new GPU server for LLM inference or model training
- Installing or upgrading NVIDIA drivers and CUDA toolkit
- Configuring Docker with NVIDIA Container Toolkit for GPU workloads
- Partitioning A100/H100 GPUs with MIG for multi-tenant workloads
- Troubleshooting GPU errors, driver issues, or thermal throttling

## Prerequisites

- Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (recommended) or RHEL 8/9
- NVIDIA GPU (A10G, A100, H100, RTX 4090, or L40S recommended)
- Root or sudo access
- Internet access for package downloads

## Driver Installation (Ubuntu)

```bash
# Remove old drivers
sudo apt purge -y 'nvidia*' 'cuda*' 'libcuda*'
sudo apt autoremove -y
# Add NVIDIA package repository
distribution=$(. /etc/os-release; echo $ID$VERSION_ID)
curl -fsSL https://nvidia.github.io/libnvidia-container/gpgkey | \
  sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/nvidia-container-toolkit-keyring.gpg
curl -s -L https://nvidia.github.io/libnvidia-container/$distribution/libnvidia-container.list | \
  sed 's#deb https://#deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/nvidia-container-toolkit-keyring.gpg] https://#g' | \
  sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nvidia-container-toolkit.list
sudo apt update
# Install latest driver (560.x as of 2025)
sudo apt install -y nvidia-driver-560 cuda-toolkit-12-6
# Install NVIDIA Container Toolkit (Docker GPU support)
sudo apt install -y nvidia-container-toolkit
sudo nvidia-ctk runtime configure --runtime=docker
sudo systemctl restart docker
# Verify
nvidia-smi
nvcc --version
docker run --rm --gpus all nvidia/cuda:12.6.0-base-ubuntu22.04 nvidia-smi
```

## Post-Install Configuration

```bash
# Enable persistence mode (reduces driver initialization latency)
sudo nvidia-smi -pm 1
# Set power limit (reduce heat/noise on inference servers)
sudo nvidia-smi -pl 350          # watts; check TDP for your GPU model
# Disable ECC on inference servers (frees ~6% VRAM, less safe)
sudo nvidia-smi --ecc-config=0   # requires reboot
