## What it does

The skill lays out how to write Go tests the idiomatic way. Inside: the table-driven pattern with `t.Run()` subtests, parallel runs via `t.Parallel()`, and file naming rules — `*_test.go` next to the code, separate files for integration tests, a `testdata` folder for fixtures.

Assertions come from testify. `assert` keeps the test going after a failure, `require` stops it. A separate section covers suites with `SetupSuite` and `TearDownSuite` for shared database and service setup. Mocks are built with gomock through interfaces, so dependencies like a database or an external API get swapped in a type-safe way. Benchmarks, the race detector and coverage reporting round it out.

Installation pulls dependencies from the repository, so you need a working Go toolchain and access to `github.com/stretchr/testify` and gomock first — without them the examples won't compile. The skill is marked `user-invocable: false`, so you can't call it by hand; the agent picks it up when tests are on the table.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-testing-strategies -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/golang-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/golang-testing-strategies/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-testing-strategies -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/golang-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-testing-strategies -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/golang-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills golang-testing-strategies
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/golang-testing-strategies/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-testing-strategies -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/golang/golang-testing-strategies
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/golang-testing-strategies/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill golang-testing-strategies -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- write a table-driven test covering several inputs
- swap manual error checks for assert and require
- mock a database interface with gomock
- benchmark a hot code path
- run the race detector over concurrent code

## Example prompts
- write table-driven tests for ValidateUser
- rewrite this test with testify and require for the critical checks
- mock the UserRepository interface with gomock

# Go Testing Strategies

## Overview

Go provides a robust built-in testing framework (`testing` package) that emphasizes simplicity and developer productivity. Combined with community tools like testify and gomock, Go testing enables comprehensive test coverage with minimal boilerplate.

**Key Features:**
- 📋 **Table-Driven Tests**: Idiomatic pattern for testing multiple inputs
- ✅ **Testify**: Readable assertions and test suites
- 🎭 **Gomock**: Type-safe interface mocking
- ⚡ **Benchmarking**: Built-in performance testing
- 🔍 **Race Detector**: Concurrent code safety verification
- 📊 **Coverage**: Native coverage reporting and enforcement
- 🚀 **CI Integration**: Test caching and parallel execution

## When to Use This Skill

Activate this skill when:
- Writing test suites for Go libraries or applications
- Setting up testing infrastructure for new projects
- Mocking external dependencies (databases, APIs, services)
- Benchmarking performance-critical code paths
- Ensuring thread-safe concurrent implementations
- Integrating tests into CI/CD pipelines
- Migrating from other testing frameworks

## Core Testing Principles

### The Go Testing Philosophy

1. **Simplicity Over Magic**: Use standard library when possible
2. **Table-Driven Tests**: Test multiple scenarios with single function
3. **Subtests**: Organize related tests with `t.Run()`
4. **Interface-Based Mocking**: Mock dependencies through interfaces
