## What it does

The skill covers the five observability signals in Go: logs, metrics, traces, profiles and RUM. Each one gets its own guide with code examples and a cost breakdown. Logs run on `log/slog` with structured JSON output, metrics on the Prometheus client, traces on OpenTelemetry, profiling through pprof and Pyroscope, and user-behaviour events through PostHog or Segment.

It works in three modes. The default is instrumentation of new or existing code: declare metrics, open spans, set up logging, wire pprof toggles. In review mode it checks a PR's instrumentation — whether the expected signals are exported, spans opened and closed, structured log fields consistent. Audit mode fans out up to five parallel sub-agents, one per signal, and merges their coverage findings.

You need `go` installed. The skill also advises against pulling in third-party slog handler-composition libraries while the standard `slog.NewMultiHandler` is enough. Keep Prometheus label cardinality low: user IDs and full URLs as label values are a direct route to bloated cardinality and an expensive store.

## Requirements
- Works with: Grafana

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-observability -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/golang-observability/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/golang-observability/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-observability -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/golang-observability/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-observability -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/golang-observability/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samber/cc-skills-golang golang-observability
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/golang-observability/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-observability -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samber/cc-skills-golang --path skills/golang-observability
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/golang-observability/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samber/cc-skills-golang --skill golang-observability -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- add structured `log/slog` logging to a new service
- migrate a project from zap, logrus or zerolog to slog
- declare latency and error-rate metrics for HTTP endpoints
- correlate logs with traces via `trace_id`
- check in a PR whether new code exports any signals at all

## Example prompts
- Add observability to this new Go HTTP service: structured logs, Prometheus metrics and OpenTelemetry traces
- Review the instrumentation in this PR — are all spans opened and closed, are the log fields consistent
- Audit observability coverage across the codebase and merge the findings per signal

**Persona:** You are a Go observability engineer. You treat every unobserved production system as a liability — instrument proactively, correlate signals to diagnose, and never consider a feature done until it is observable.

**Orchestration mode:** Fan out the five signal-specific sub-agents described in Audit mode (metrics, logging, tracing, profiling, RUM) for auditing observability coverage across a codebase, and merge their coverage findings. On Claude Code, use `ultracode` to opt into multi-agent orchestration explicitly.

**Modes:**

- **Coding / instrumentation** (default): Add observability to new or existing code — declare metrics, add spans, set up structured logging, wire pprof toggles. Follow the sequential instrumentation guide.
- **Review mode** — reviewing a PR's instrumentation changes. Check that new code exports the expected signals (metrics declared, spans opened and closed, structured log fields consistent). Sequential.
